Job Summary

The Opportunity
A well-established 1118 academy in Derbyshire is looking for an engaging and ambitious English Teacher to join its department from January 2026. This full-time permanent position will involve teaching across Key Stages 35 (GCSE and A-Level) and contributing to the development of English provision across the school.

We are seeking a candidate who:

  • Holds QTS PGCE or equivalent teaching qualification
  • Demonstrates strong subject knowledge in English literature language and writing
  • Is confident teaching GCSE and ideally A-Level English
  • Crafts lessons that balance challenge depth and accessibility
  • Uses assessment feedback and questioning to promote student progress
  • Works collaboratively and can contribute to department innovation

Experience in leading enrichment (reading clubs school magazine debating creative writing) or mentoring less confident writers would be a plus.

About the School
This academy caters to around 1400 students (aged 11 to 18) with a vibrant Sixth Form programme. The school operates across two closely situated sites: one main campus and a dedicated Sixth Form centre allowing a focused environment for older students. Recent facility upgrades include a new teaching block expanded student dining and sports changing rooms reflecting the schools ongoing capital investment.

The schools recent performance is strong: at A-Level the average points per entry is approximately 44 (B) with a 100% pass rate in vocational GCSEs 63% of students achieved a grade 4 in both English and Maths and 44% achieved a grade 5. The Sixth Form routinely outperforms student targets achieving on average one-third to half a grade above expectations.

The Role in More Detail
You will deliver English lessons across all year groups including planning assessment and exam preparation. Youll guide students in reading writing speaking and critical analysis encouraging them to engage with texts in creative and meaningful ways. Youll manage coursework mentor students and help shape departmental schemes of work assessments and cross-curricular projects.

You may also lead or support extra-curricular activities such as creative writing clubs poetry slams debating or book fairs and coordinate student publications or community writing initiatives. Collaboration with other departments (e.g. humanities media drama) is encouraged to build cross-textual links and literacy across the school.
