Job Summary:

This full-time University Staff (unclassified) Animal Care III (Assistant Facility Manager) position provides routine and specialized care for a wide variety of species of large and small laboratory animals which are used by scientists for biomedical research and education at the University of Colorado Denver and Anschutz Medical Campuses. The Assistant Facility Manager position will facilitate the normal day-to-day operations of the OLAR run animal facilities by providing direct supervision to the departments animal care staff and hands-on management in accordance with regulatory and CU Denver Anschutz standards. The Assistant Facility Manager assists the Facility Manager with the implementation of the animal care program and the associated procedures and policies of OLAR. The Assistant Facility Manager has supervisory responsibilities over the animal husbandry positions operating in the animal facilities. This position has the authority to assign tasks evaluate and implement training processes check the animal husbandry staffs work for timeliness and correctness monitor progress and workflow making adjustments as necessary and participate in the hiring evaluation and grievance processes as well as initiate the disciplinary action process. The Assistant Facility Manager is responsible for the work of the OLAR husbandry staff and must ensure the smooth day-to-day operations of the animal facility.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Assign monitor and supervise the daily activities of the animal husbandry personnel to ensure appropriate staffing levels.

  • Ensure and supervise the care comfort nutrition and safety provided to research animals housed in the facilities.

  • Perform regular walk-throughs of the facility to ensure compliance.

  • Follow up with any non-compliance issues that have been noted to ensure correction.

  • Supervise staff responsible for; the receipt of incoming animals from standard vendors the intra-departmental transfers of animals oversight of researcher requested animal identification or technical procedures cage supply reporting and assigning work schedules for missing staff.

  • Build and maintain good working relationships within the department while overseeing daily operations of the facility. Perform and report time collection for husbandry employees.

  • Oversee and/or participate in the completion of the weekly census audit.

  • Coordinate the schedules for direct reports and adjust assigned work schedules accordingly.

  • Participate in human resource functions by participating in the interview process for applicants for departmental positions make recommendations on hires; set objectives and conduct performance appraisals for staff; and handle the initial steps in the corrective action/disciplinary process for the staff knowing when to involve the Facility Manager or other higher levels of management up to and including the Director.

  • Work with Facility Manager and Operations Management team for facility maintenance needs preparing and reporting work orders and acting as a liaison between the facility and those performing service including the monitoring of the automated watering system the HVAC system (both room level and rack level) the lighting control system and the temperature and humidity system. This includes troubleshooting acknowledging alarms reporting problems for repair responding to outages and requesting staff to report to water alarms after hours.

  • Work with other departmental supervisors assistant managers and managers to manage equipment and/or supply shortages that affect the facility operations.

  • Train orient assign monitor ensure compliance and supervise the daily activities of the husbandry personnel as well as oversee daily operations of the facility.

  • Work with other departmental supervisors and managers to develop and implement policies SOPs and an appropriate training program to ensure compliance with the regulations including continuing education and new staff training.

  • Serve as a research staff liaison including being a point of contact for requests and assistance as required on a daily basis with the overall responsibility to ensure that all OLAR customers receive high quality care and customer service.

  • Submit orders for supplies when they are needed while being mindful of the budget.

  • Assist Facility Manager and other upper management to ensure that the department budget is being used appropriately.

  • Perform the duties of the Facility Manager and other Assistant Facility Managers in their absence.

  • Provide backup assistance to all departmental positions as needed.

  • On occasion may be required to drive a University vehicle to transport animals in cases of emergency.

  • On occasion may supervise and schedule a research van to transport animals and supplies between facilities.

Perform all other duties as assigned.

Qualifications:

Minimum Qualifications:

  • At least 3 years of experience working in an animal related field caring for feeding or providing health care for animals. Examples of animal related fields may include: veterinary laboratory breeding zoological or boarding facility.

  • Two of the three years of experience must be for research and/or instructional purposes. One year of experience must be in a lead or supervisory role.

Applicants must meet minimum qualifications at the time of hire.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • Experience as a work leader assigning tasks monitoring the progress and workflow and scheduling work for other employees in a research field.

  • Experience entering data into a database (e.g. Excel and Access).

  • Experience keeping activity logs and managing inventory.

  • Experience handling rodents (rats and mice).

  • Experience in an animal research facility.

  • Experience operating complex machinery.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Excellent oral communication skills with the ability to handle stressful situations in a calm and professional manner.

  • Detail oriented and possess excellent written communication skills (which includes the ability to check for typographical grammatical and spelling errors).

  • Strong interpersonal skills and the ability to establish rapport with persons of diverse backgrounds.

  • Computer skills that includes experience with e-mail word processing and manipulating databases to include tracking software especially with the Microsoft Office Suite of products.

  • Ability to investigate and develop solutions to problems by changing processes or educating other individuals to include direct reports peers supervisors and customers.

  • Knowledge of an animal research facility with ability to handle rodents and other commonly used research species.

  • Ability to maintain an activity log.

  • Ability to work with complex machinery mechanical ability.

  • Able to teach mentor and supervise staff effectively.

  • Planning and organization skills.

  • Ability to teach and lead others by example.

  • Provide high quality customer service.

The starting salary range (or hiring range) for this position has been established as HIRING RANGE $63000 - $68000
