The Role
Analyzes researches designs and develops materials and their related fabrication and application processes to develop and optimize materials for use in engineering design of and/or application in structures systems and subsystems. Applies principles of chemistry physics and material behavior to develop metallic non-metallic and composite material and processing specifications fabrication and assembly processes. Develops analyzes and applies material properties and design allowables processing processes and quality engineering specifications. Material analyses may include failure analysis of components systems and subsystems life predictions and definition and requirement specifications. May review and approve subcontractor material processing procedures.
This position is within Newport News Shipbuildings NDT Engineering department. Responsibilities will include implementation of NDT advanced technologies and technical support of NDT processes across programs. Additionally candidate will be expected to assist with the interpretation and execution of technical specifications troubleshooting of processes equipment and evaluate quality / performance issues. Position may involve participation in the development implementation and instruction of training programs modification of procedures review of customer and company technical specifications material selection and research and development projects. The candidate should possess the ability to communicate effectively with a range of audiences.
Must Have
Bachelors Degree and 9 years of relevant exempt experience; Masters Degree and 7 years of relevant professional experience; Ph.D. and 4 years of experience.
Newport News Shipbuilding requires a Bachelors Degree in engineering from an ABET accredited program.
Nice to Have
Welding mechanical or materials engineering degree with NDT knowledge in all methods
Preferred to have experience in advanced NDT including PAUT Computed Radiography and Array Eddy Current
Strong statistical analysis root cause analysis and common cause analysis
Strong problem solving and critical thinking skills
The ability to interface with various internal and external customers and management
