LING 101: Mysteries of Human Language: An Introduction to Linguistics

The Department of Liberal Studies at California State University San Marcos seeks a part-time lecturer for Spring 2026 to teach an introduction to linguistics course. This course will be held Tuesdays and Thursdays from 9:00 a.m. to 10:15 a.m.

Course Description

Introduces the richness and diversity of language how languages work and how the study of language provides insights into the human mind. Covers foundational concepts in core areas of linguistics (phonetics phonology morphology syntax pragmatics sociolinguistics historical linguistics neurolinguistics language acquisition and bilingualism) and analyzes how languages are similar and different from each other.

Minimum Qualifications:

  • A masters degree in Linguistics or in a related field
  • Experience teaching higher education courses in linguistics
  • Per the California State Universitys Out-of-State Employment Policy the CSU is prohibited from hiring employees to perform CSU-related work outside California. Working in the State of California is a condition of employment.

Preferred Qualifications:

  • A doctorate in Linguistics or in a related field.
  • Preference will be given to applicants with a demonstrated commitment to diversity and/or intercultural competence with diverse groups in relation to teaching.

Salary commensurate with degree level and experience

  • Anticipated Hiring Salary Range: $5507 - $8500 per full-time month

The salary schedule information for the Lecturer Academic Year Classification is available based on the following ranges:

  • CSU Classification Salary RangeLecturer A - AY: $5507 - $6677 per full-time month
  • CSU Classification Salary RangeLecturer B - AY: $6221 - $13224 per full-time month

The anticipated hiring range is generally at or near the minimum of the appropriate range commensurate with education and experience.
