Description of the Position: (Purpose of the Position):
Conversation partners offer an opportunity for students to practice speaking in a supportive space with feedback related to language campus culture and discourse strategies. Conversation partners work mostly but not exclusively with multilingual students in their first year at St. Olaf in order to help them feel competent and confident joining the conversations (academic and social) that are taking place all around them on campus.
Transferable Skills:
This position is ideal for students who might have a future in language education and cross-cultural interaction. Conversation partners gain valuable experience
Duties and Responsibilities:
Conversation partners must be flexible and ready to try different approaches to help students reach their goals. Activities might include talking about classes and course content college and campus culture and current events; reading or listening to a text together and then discussing the text or making use of it for an academic purpose (summarizing evaluating defending); practicing strategies for in-class discussion.
