King County protects water quality and public health in the central Puget Sound region by providing high quality and effective treatment to wastewater collected from our local sewer agencies. We collect and clean wastewater while recovering valuable resources for a healthy and resilient Puget Sound. King Countys wastewater operations staff provides the expertise and dedication required to operate and maintain wastewater treatment and collection facilities to insure protection of the environment and the health of all King County communities.

About The Role:

You will serve in a key Operations & Maintenance leadership role that reports to the Wastewater Treatment Plant Manager and collaborates across plant leadership to ensure the safe and effective collection and treatment of wastewater. This position serves the critical role of managing a team that is responsible for operating 20 pump stations 6 storm water stations and 2 small treatment plants. The successful candidate has a combination of knowledge and experience that demonstrates technical acumen in conveyance plant operations maintenance & process.


The primary function of this role is to lead direct and supervise the operations team assigned to the King County East Offsite facilities.

Job Duties

What You Will Be Doing:

  • Schedule and organize planned work activities and projects throughout the conveyance system for the East Section Off-Site facilities. Develop short- and long-term work plans and objectives.

  • Organize coordinate and provide technical expertise on long-range projects with managers contractors design engineers vendors and agencys construction management division. Develop business plans for assigned areas of responsibility.

  • Review plans designs or procedures for assigned segment of major construction projects with managers contractors design engineers vendors and agencys construction management division.

  • Effectively coordinate duties between maintenance and operations staff. Foster collaboration between all workgroups; mediate any disagreements.

  • Coordinate with the Industrial Maintenance Program Specialist in scheduling and prioritizing work orders internally and with other divisions departments and agencies.

  • Train and develop operations staff on all aspects of offsite facilities. Develop training plans for offsite team members. Ensure adherence to all policies standards and procedures.

  • Establish pump station building housekeeping standards and ensure compliance check station cleanliness and log/checklist entries. Submit work requests as necessary approve/close work orders and monitor their status regularly. Develop and monitor inspection program for miscellaneous structures.

  • Prepare review and evaluate employee job performance and provide constructive feedback provide mentoring recommend and/or initiate disciplinary action.

  • Receive and investigate complaints as well as inquiries from the general public provide information to interested parties on issues regarding area of specialization. Ensure that all safety personnel and work standard policies are followed.

  • Screen and select prospective employees including developing field tests and interviewing candidates.


Experience Qualifications Knowledge Skills

Qualifications You Bring:

  • Knowledge of the operation and maintenance of wastewater treatment and conveyance systems including the regulations and requirements as they relate to operation and maintenance of these facilities.
  • Knowledge of the principles and practices of engineering and systems operation.
  • Skill in writing and communicating technical and non-technical information; Skill in reading and interpreting technical information and making presentations to non-technical and technical audiences.
  • Knowledge of the description function and major components of lift stations.
  • Knowledge of the description and function of computerized remote and supervisory control systems used to control operate and monitor a major wastewater treatment system.
  • Knowledge of operating monitoring maintaining and training on the equipment and systems in the collection and conveyance system and small treatment plant systems.

Required Licenses/Certifications:
  • Washington Group III Wastewater Treatment Plant Operator certification from the Washington State Department of Ecology or out-of-state equivalent
  • Valid Washington State Drivers License
  • CPR and first aid certification (completion within 6 months)

It Would Be Great If You Also Bring:
  • Experience working on capital projects.
  • Experience working in wastewater conveyance systems.
  • Experience working in storm water management.

Workplace Exposure:
  • Industrial location potential exposure to chemicals noise confined space respirator use and viral contaminants on a daily basis.

Working Conditions:

  • Work Location:1200 Monster Rd SW Renton WA 98057.

  • Work Schedule: This full-time position works a 40-hour work week. This position is exempt from the provisions of the Fair Labor Standards Act (FLSA) and is not overtime eligible.

  • Union Representation: This position is represented by Teamsters Local 117 Wastewater Treatment Division Supervisor.

    • NOTE:Salary reflects $1.00 per hour contribution to the Western Conference of Teamsters Pension Trust.
