Position Details:
As part of the Selective Mutism Service team you will report to Directors of Selective Mutism Service. You will gain hands-on experience delivering evidence-based behavioral interventions for children with Selective Mutism. This unpaid internship offers structured training and direct supervision from the Directors of the Selective Mutism Service providing a valuable learning opportunity in a clinical group setting. The intern will participate in weekly and seasonal programs designed to enhance practical skills and professional development. A minimum one-year commitment is required.
This is an unpaid part-time (minimum of 3 hours per week which may vary based on the needs of the program) fully on-site internship located in our NYC headquarters office.
Required Schedule
Interns must be available Thursdays from 3:30 pm 5:30 pm EST for weekly in-person groups as well as during seasonal Brave Buddies programs our signature group-based intensive program for Children with SM.
See below for required dates and times including tentative 2025-2026 Brave Buddies program dates. Interns are expected to attend the entirety of each program with the exception of approved religious observances:
- Required Onboarding
- HR Orientation: All interns are required to attend one HR Orientation session. These are held semi-monthly on Tuesdays from 12:0012:45 PM EST.
- Selective Mutism Training. For those that have already received CMI Selective Mutism Training this requirement can be waived. For those that have not been trained this is a required training.
- Mandatory Training: All interns are required to complete HIPAA and Harassment Prevention training.
- HR Orientation: All interns are required to attend one HR Orientation session. These are held semi-monthly on Tuesdays from 12:0012:45 PM EST.
- Weekly SM Groups
- Thursdays 3:30PM-5:30PM weekly
- OptionalWeekly Supervision / Administrative Meeting
- Thursdays 1-2PM is optional to attend weekly SM Service team meetings
- Required Brave Buddies Program Dates (Tentative and Subject to Change*)

- November 11th 2025 from 8am -3pm EST
- Winter Two-Day
- February 12th and February 13th 2026 from 8am 3pm EST
- Spring One-Day
- May 14th 2026 from 8am 3pm EST
- Early Summer Two-Day
- June 25th and June 26th 2026 from 8am-3pm EST
- Summer Five-Day
- July 30th and 31st from 11am 6pm EST (prep week)
- August 3rd through August 7th 2026 from 8am 3pm EST
- July 30th and 31st from 11am 6pm EST (prep week)
- August 3rd through August 7th 2026 from 8am 3pm EST
- Fall One-Day
You Will:
- Assist clinical staff during weekly Selective Mutism group sessions and Brave Buddies intensive programs.
- Support preparation and setup for group activities under supervision.
- Participate in team meetings and training sessions as scheduled.
- Document observations and contribute to program-related administrative tasks as directed.
- Maintain confidentiality and adhere to all organizational policies and procedures.
Learning Opportunities:
- Receive formal training in Parent-Child Interaction Therapy for Selective Mutism (PCIT-SM) including a comprehensive 10-hour initial training.
- Gain direct experience working with children affected by selective mutism in both group and intensive settings.
- Develop clinical and communication skills through supervised hands-on participation in evidence-based treatment programs.
- Benefit from ongoing mentorship and reflective supervision from Directors and clinical staff.
- Learn to apply behavioral intervention techniques designed to improve childrens communication and confidence.
You Have:
- Bachelors degree acquired or in progress (proof of enrollment will need to be provided)
- 1 month of experience working with children and/or in a clinical setting
