SUMMARY
Under the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) cooperative agreement Heluna Health and the Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) of the California Department of Public Health (CDPH) are recruiting for an Epidemiologist to be part of the Mycotic Diseases team.
The Epidemiologist will work with staff in the California Department of Public Health Infectious Diseases Branch (IDB) to improve coordination and surveillance for mycotic diseases including coccidioidomycosis (Valley fever) histoplasmosis and aspergillosis. The Epidemiologists primary responsibility would be to support the senior Mycotic Diseases Epidemiologist and other CDPH staff in conducting routine and enhanced surveillance for Valley fever a respiratory fungal disease endemic in California which has been increasing dramatically in recent years. Additional responsibilities would be to assist with outbreak investigations data surveillance and outreach efforts (including educational materials for healthcare providers and the general public.).
This positions major responsibilities would be to clean analyze and summarize data; to assist with development of protocols and data collection tools; to conduct patient and screening interviews; to assist with outreach to high-risk groups including outdoor workers; to communicate data and public health messages orally and in writing; and to assist with public and provider health education efforts.
The salary range for this position is $80484 - $102010.25 per year depending on experience/qualifications.
This full-time temporary position is grant funded through 07/31/2026 but may be extended if funding is available.

ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Manage clean and analyze data of existing surveillance datasets
- Assist with the establishment of new protocols and data collection tools
- Assist with the generation of data visualizations and written and oral reports
- Interview patients regarding health impacts of Valley fever
- Assist with health education efforts for the public and healthcare providers
- Establish and maintain reliable efficient and effective methods for communicating with team members partners and patients via telephone and email
- Participate in conference calls with partners at CDPH CDC California LHDs laboratories and other state and local health departments
- Perform other duties as directed by the DIS Chief
- Collaborate effectively in a team environment
NON-ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS
- Assist with other infectious disease-related projects as time and interest allows
JOB QUALIFICATIONS
- Demonstrated ability to perform data entry cleaning quality assessment and analysis with attention to detail
- Demonstrated ability to effectively communicate orally and in writing regarding public health or related issues
- Ability to provide health education and communicate basic infectious disease information to patients and members of the public
- Knowledge and application of Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) requirements and protection of health information
- Prior experience conducting telephone-based patient interviews preferred
- Prior knowledge and experience in use of CalREDIE preferred
- Prior experience with Valley fever preferred
- Prior experience with working at a health department preferred
- Completes assignments in a timely and efficient manner
- Ability to prioritize and manage multiple tasks and work independently
- Demonstrate reliability and integrity
- Fluency in spoken English; fluency in Spanish or other languages preferred
Education/Experience
- Graduate degree in public health or related field required
- Experience with epidemiology and data analysis required
- Basic knowledge and experience with Statistical Analysis Software (SAS) required
- Experience presenting on public health or related issues orally and in writing required
- Experience with Microsoft products including Word Excel Outlook PowerPoint and Access; strong knowledge of Word and Excel required
- Experience with writing guidelines standard operating procedures training materials preferred
- Experience conducting interviews with or working with patients or research participants preferred
- Experience with health education or outreach preferred
- Experience with clinical terminology and interpreting laboratory testing results preferred
Other Skills Knowledge and Abilities
- Basic knowledge and experience with data visualization software such as SQL or Tableau preferred
- Experience working with interview/survey software such as REDCap preferred
