Essential Functions:
- Work with the Senior Behavior Training Manager to define strategic goals and objectives for the behavior program identify and evaluate trends and options choose a course of action and evaluate outcomes of all shelter animals.
- Provide follow-up phone consultations for adopters experiencing behavior issues with an adopted pet.
- Develop and provide informative materials on preventing problem behaviors in the home for adopters.
- Conduct staff and volunteer animal handling classes.
- Evaluate and perform behavior assessments on shelter animals as well as animal surrenders possessing potential behavioral concerns prior to intake and make recommendations to management based on the results of the assessment.
- Works with shelter animals to assess and improve their potential for positive outcomes.
- Operates an enrichment program aimed at mitigating stress in the shelter environment.
- Will occasionally facilitate interactions between dogs with special behavior concerns and interested adopters.
- Documents results and updates status and/or holds and memo information in Petpoint database based on results.
- Works with animals and follows behavior modification protocols unique to each animals noted challenges.
- Ability to Google docs Google calendars email PetPoint and Microsoft suite of products proficiently and efficiently without additional training.
- Assist medical staff in handling behavior animals to ensure staff and animal safety.
- Assist on cruelty cases by conducting field assessments and helping where directed.
Knowledge Skill and Abilities Needed to Perform the Essential Functions of this Position:
- Bachelors degree in Animal Behavior Studies Zoology Animal Science or a closely related field. Two (2) years of experience working as a certified behaviorist or behavior consultant in a shelter setting or closely related experience and one (1) of the following certifications as listed below. An equivalent combination of education or experience may be substituted. Experience can offset education on a year-to-year basis.
- Certification from one of the following within the first year: Certified Professional Dog Trainer Knowledge Assessed (CPDTKA) Karen Pryor Academy Certified Training Partner (KPACTP) Canine Training Center (CTC) Academy of Veterinary Behavior Technicians (ACAAB) Animal Behavior Society: Certified Animal Behaviorist (CAAB) Certification Council for Professional Dog Training (CCPDT) or International Association of Animal Behavior Consultants (IAABC).
