Job Summary:
The Department of University Police and Public Safety at SUNY Downstate Health Sciences University is seeking a full-time Inspector Training and Crime Analysis / Staff Associate.
The Inspector for Training and Crime Analysis will report directly to the Chief of University Police. This position will be part of the departments Command Staff and will provide managerial support to the Chief of Police and the Assistant Chief of Police and will provide supervision of both the Patrol and Administrative staff in the absence of the Chiefs.
The Inspector will be responsible for specific accreditation and crime reporting functions to ensure compliance with various New York State and Federal Government regulations. They will act as the Departments Training Coordinator overseeing all facets of training for the department including active shooter training for both the University Police Department and the Campus ensuring compliance with New York State Department of Criminal Justice Services (NYS DCJS) and Municipal Police Training Council (MPTC) requirements for all training and will coordinate all on campus training to be conducted by the University Police Department; will coordinate with the Assistant Chief/Chief of Patrol on the Field Training Program for newly appointed supervisors and Patrol Officers as well as Security Services Assistants; will confer with the Chiefs regularly to identify and evaluate training needs and address accordingly; will coordinate and schedule all in-house and outside agency training while coordinating with department supervisors to maintain adequate patrol staffing levels to ensure normal operations of the department; review all orders and prepare summaries of pertinent information for presentation to members of the department; conduct quarterly firearms audits; attend New York State Law Enforcement Training Directors Association meetings as requested by the Chiefs; prepare law bulletins updating members of the department about changes in various New York State and Federal Laws; conduct research into various issues and prepare lesson plans to be approved by the Chief of Patrol.
This position will be responsible for reviewing all police reports generated by University Police Patrol Staff to ensure proper incident and crime classifications; review reports to ensure crime classifications are in accordance with Jeanne Clery Act guidelines and Uniform Crime Reporting; review reports to ensure compliance with various University initiatives and ensure compliance and provisions including the following:
Additionally this position will work closely with the Chiefs to ensure that staffing levels for patrol are sufficient to address criminal trends both on and around campus and to review and recommend improvements in the University Police policies and procedures.
The University Police Inspector will represent the department at meetings as requested by the Chiefs will serve on various campus committees as requested by the Chiefs; will assist with maintaining an up to date list of various required staff licensing and training requirements which will be shared with other department leadership and administrative staff; will be responsible for the preparation and tracking of department mandatory training; will represent the department at various orientation programs including new employee orientation; will assist with the preparation and tracking of Patrol Staff evaluations and scheduling of Employee Health Screenings.
As requested this position will also support the recruitment efforts of the University Police Department by assisting with the tracking of responses to civil service canvases scheduling interviews and agility tests the preparation and processing of personnel transactions and coordination with Human Resources regarding the onboarding of candidates.
As required this position will assist the Administrative staff with the daily completion of Patrol Staff time-sheets the preparation and submission of the bi-weekly payroll and overtime reports monitoring of Patrol Staff time and attendance and working with the department Administrator to advise the Chiefs of any T&A matters that need to be addressed will coordinate all special parking requests.
