Job Summary

Introduction

This is an exciting opportunity to volunteer with our Indigenous Rights team as a research assistant over 6 months!

As a valued member of the Indigenous Rights Team you will play a key role in supporting our work on youth justice. Your responsibilities will include providing administrative support drafting and submitting Freedom of Information (FOI) requests and collating inputting and maintaining up-to-date data. This position offers an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on research experience develop professional skills and contribute directly to human rights advocacy. You will work closely with campaigners focused youth justice.

Volunteers also have access to training and development opportunities and the chance to contribute meaningfully to one of the worlds leading human rights organisations.

The role involves a commitment of 46 hours per week for 6 months (from induction dates flexible).



Description

As part of the team you may be responsible for:

  • Providing administrative support to the Indigenous Rights Team
  • Drafting and submitting Freedom of Information (FOI) requests
  • Collecting collating and maintaining up-to-date data on youth justice issues
  • Supporting research on systemic human rights concerns affecting Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and communities
  • Assisting with the preparation of research briefs reports and other materials to inform campaigns and advocacy
  • Ensuring accurate record-keeping and adherence to organisational policies and procedures


Skills And Experiences

To be successful in this role you will have:

  • Currently studying 2nd year or higher in Law Criminology Politics Arts Indigenous Studies Human Rights or a related field
  • Strong research and analytical skills including gathering collating and summarising information from multiple sources
  • Excellent writing and communication skills with the ability to produce clear concise and well-structured reports or briefs
  • Experience with data entry spreadsheets or database management with high attention to detail
  • Understanding of human rights issues and/or youth justice particularly relating to Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander communities
  • Familiarity with Freedom of Information (FOI) requests is a plus but not essential
  • Ability to work independently and collaboratively manage multiple tasks and meet deadlines

Desirable qualifications skills and experience:

  • Experience in drafting and submitting Freedom of Information (FOI) requests
  • Understanding of youth justice issues and their impact on Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander children and communities
  • Previous experience in a research or data management role (volunteer academic or professional)
