Trainee / Medical Laboratory Technician Specimen Services

Awanui Labs Timaru (previously known as Medlab South Timaru) is the provider of pathology services to the people of South Canterbury; providing pathology services to the patients of Medical Specialists Hospital Clinicians General Practitioners and Midwives. Awanui Labs Timaru is a part of Awanui Group (previously known as APHG) the largest network of human and veterinary diagnostics laboratories in NZ. Awanui Group has laboratories throughout the country and is committed to providing facilities and services that deliver exceptional care to its clients.

About the role Mō te tūranga:

Our Specimen Services department is looking for a Trainee or Medical Laboratory Technician. This is a permanent full- time position of 80 hours per fortnight. As we are a 24/7 laboratory and our department operates from 4:00 am to midnight participation in the evening shifts and weekend roster will be required.

Key tasks includes:

  • Barcoding receipting and preparing specimens coming into the laboratory; performing data entry of patient and test details; answering telephones.
  • You will work collaboratively as part of the team work well under pressure and have an eye for detail and problem-solving ability.

To succeed in this role you will need:

  • The ability to work in a methodical manner adhering to strict quality procedure guidelines.
  • Customer focus and commitment to providing a high quality of service to internal and external customers with effective interpersonal skills.
  • A sound knowledge of medical terminology laboratory operations including safety operation of equipment and hands-on practical experience is desirable but not essential.
  • Diploma in Applied Science or a Bachelor of Science would be an advantage but not essential.
  • Registration with the Medical Science Council and an Annual Practising Certificate as a Medical Laboratory Pre-Analytical Technician in Specimen Services is desirable but not essential.
  • Willingness to participate in an evening/after-hours roster and be on call as required.
  • Eligibility to work in New Zealand.
