Position Description

POSITION TITLE:Child Nutrition Director

F.L.S.A. Exempt Administrative

QUALIFICATIONS:

  • Bachelorsdegree preferred with emphasis in nutrition or dietetics.

  • Three years of experience with commercial food preparation preferred.

  • Two years of managerial experience preferred.

  • Good organization communication and interpersonal skills.

  • Comprehensive knowledge of USDA guidelines food safety menu planning budgeting and personnel management.
  • Strong leadership communication organizational interpersonal skills and analytical skills.
  • Experience with specialized nutrition and management software is preferred.

REPORTS TO:Superintendent of Schools or designee

MAJORJOB RESPONSIBILITIES:To effectively manage and oversee the school districts nutrition program ensuring all students have access to nutritious appealing meals that meet federal and state guidelines while maintaining a safe and efficient food service operation promoting healthy eating habits and collaborating with school staff and the community to support student wellness; this includes planning menus supervising staff maintaining food safety standards and educating students about healthy food choices.

Reports to the Superintendent of Schools or designee any inappropriate behavior involving students or staff.

Days in Contract: 240/8 hours per day

Manage 60 employees

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

  1. Serve as a consultant to coordinate the food service program with all educational functions of the school district.

  2. Work with Human Resources in the selection assignment orientation and evaluation of performance for all food service personnel.

  3. Develop and assign work schedules for food service employees.

  4. Provide in-service training for all food service personnel.

  5. Conduct regular meetings with all building managers satellite coordinator and satellite leads.

  6. Effectively communicate with the schools and the community to keep constituents informed of menu selections and upcoming special events in food service.

  7. Plan and supervise food service and personnel for district special functions when requested.

  8. Review all applications for free and reduced prices lunches and notify of approval or denial.

  9. Operate the food service program in accordance with Federal and State Department guidelines and local Board of Education regulations and policies.

  10. Develop and administer accurate accounting procedures to be maintained in each school for local and Federal reports.

  11. Establish a fiscal budget for the Food Service Department.

  12. Maintain accurate accounting records for all receipts and expenses of the Food Service Department.

  13. Order all foods and supplies.

  14. Supervise storage productions and serving of food in the individual schools.

  15. Maintain a food service inventory.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:

Program management and compliance

Administration:Plan implement and evaluate the child nutrition program across

all sites.
Regulatory compliance:Ensure the program complies with all federal state and

local laws and guidelines including the National School Lunch and Breakfast

Programs.
Standards enforcement:Establish and monitor standards for all food service

operations including production safety sanitation procurement and

equipmentmaintenance.
Reporting:Coordinate the preparation and submission of required records and

reports for the school district and government agencies.
Emergency plans:Develop procedures for providing food services during

emergencysituations.

Menu planning and nutrition

Menu development:Plan and analyze cost-effective and nutritious menus that

meetfederal state and local guidelines.
Dietary needs:Work with school staff parents and physicians to plan menus

forchildren with special dietary needs.
Research:Stay up-to-date on research and industry trends related to child

nutritionand food service management.
Nutrition education:Develop and promote comprehensive nutrition education

programs.

Financial management


Budgeting:Prepare and administer the departmental budget monitoring revenues

and expenditures.
Financial accountability:Maintain a system for financial accountability and manage

fiscal controls.
Procurement:Oversee the purchasing of food supplies and equipment including

soliciting bids and managing vendor agreements.
Pricing:Recommend school meal prices based on participation and budget needs.
Meal applications:Coordinate the advertising distribution and approval of free and

reduced-price meal applications.

Personnel management

Supervision:Directly supervise and manage all child nutrition staff including

hiringtraining and performance evaluation.

Policy implementation:Implement personnel policies and procedures in accordance

with applicable laws.

Professional development:Establish standards and opportunities for the

professional growth of child nutrition staff providing in-service training for all food

service personnel.

Communication and outreach

Communication:Act as a liaison with school administrators staff students parents and

the public to promote the child nutrition program.

Community engagement:Cultivate support for the program from stakeholders including

the school board and community members.

OTHER JOB FUNCTIONS

Speak to students and adult groups concerning health and good nutrition and to provide

an open channel of communication between the students faculties and the Food Service

Department.

Assist in the planning of kitchen facilities for new school constructions or the remodeling

of existing buildings within the district.

Provide a Food Service Handbook for all food service personnel to explain in detail the

policies and procedures of the Food Service Department.

Attend meetings as required by the Assistant Superintendent.

All other duties as assigned

OTHER REQUIREMENTS:


Must get a food safety certification such as Serving it Safe in Schools every five years as

required by USDA.

Must have and maintain at least 12 credited hours of training or more each schoolyear.


Must pass an initial fingerprint and background clearance check and maintain a valid

fingerprint clearance card in the classroom.


May be required to lift and carry heavy bulky supplies and materials weighing up to

40 pounds.

Must have a valid drivers license.


May be required to work outside regular working hours.


May be required to travel to perform work functions.
