Job Duties

The Virginia Department of Juvenile Justice (DJJ) protects the public by preparing court-involved youth to be successful citizens. DJJ is committed to excellence in public safety by providing effective interventions that improve the lives of youth strengthening both families and communities within the Commonwealth.

We are hiring for a Special Response Team (SRT) Assistant Watch Commander to supervise the special response teams security operations. The SRT Assistant Watch Commander will also provide supervision to the Special Response Team Correctional Specialists to ensure a safe and secure environment for youth and staff. You will be responsible for responding to facility emergencies 24/7 and ensuring all written documentation is complete and accurate. Reviewing and implementing special response team policies procedures and post orders consistent with facility needs. Manages duty rosters and assesses available personnel before shift begins to ensure that priority posts are covered per established procedure.

The work hours will be 7 AM - 8 PM with a one-hour meal break. Hours are subject to change due to the needs of the facility and they are subject to draft. The work schedule assignment is to be determined.

Core Responsibilities: (Not limited to)

  • Administrative Duties-HR Management - Expectations are clear well communicated and relate to the mission vision and goals of the department; staff receive constructive informal and formal documented feedback in a timely manner; requirements of performance planning and evaluation are met within established deadlines and with proper documentation; and employee development is encouraged and fostered. Monitors/maintains a current accurate roster of all staff assigned to shift. Ensure appropriate coverage of posts is outline in approved Post Audit and Daily Duty Roster. Manages time keeping procedures for the shift and scheduled staff to ensure minimal overtime is paid.
  • General Juvenile Record/BADGE Duties - Promptly and accurately document BADGE and other juvenile information in accordance with DJJ policy and procedure. Handle confidential and sensitive juvenile information in accordance with laws policies and DJJ guidance including encrypting emails containing sensitive information (e.g. 16.1-223 16.1-300 6VAC35-160 6VAC35-170)
  • Implements PBIS Behavior Management Program - Aligns PBIS expectations to the daily schedule. Gives feedback to youth as they work towards meeting PBIS expectations.
  • Supervises Special Response Team Operations - Reviews and implements special response team policies procedures and post orders consistent with facility needs. Conducts daily inspections to detect possible security breaches and submits reports to the SRT Watch Commander. Report identified problems in a timely manner and implement appropriate corrective action
  • Supervises SRT Corrections Specialists - Supervises and directs SRT Correctional Specialists in the execution of operations plans. Give appropriate oral and/or written instructions and monitor subordinate staff implementation of post orders procedures and directives. Ensure safety requirements are met by regularly practicing safe work habits and monitoring team members actions.

  • Ability to administer first aid.
  • Demonstrates ability to work independently; effectively communicate orally and in writing.
  • Conduct inspections.
  • Demonstrated ability to supervise coach and mentor staff.
  • Knowledge of supervisory techniques performance management employee development and security procedures.
  • Ability to guide the security functions effectively plan and organize and coordinate with multi-disciplinary team members.
  • Skilled in conflict resolution and crisis intervention.

Minimum Qualifications

  • Extensive knowledge of the principles and techniques of security in a secure residential/correctional setting
  • Experience coordinating with other operational units within a secured setting
  • Experience supervising team
  • Demonstrates ability to use appropriate restraint methods
  • Demonstrates ability to operate security tools and equipment
  • Experience preparing and reviewing records and reports

Additional Considerations

  • DCJS General Instructor Certification.
  • Defensive Tactics Certification.
  • Certified Special Response Team Member.
  • Specialized training to include tactical response high-risk transportation operations institutional evacuation operations support riot/disturbance control and intelligence gathering and analysis related to gang activity and criminogenic behavior.
