Primary Purpose:
Serve in Structured Learning Classroom (SLC) overseeing the implementation of specialized behavioral and academic support for students with significant behavioral needs.
Qualifications:
Education/Certification:
Valid Texas Teaching Certificate; Special Education and General Education
Certification in Safety Care Training (can obtained after hire)
Special Knowledge/Skills:
Demonstrate ability to intervene in a crisis and physically restrain students as necessary
Thorough understanding of the components of a positive behavior support system
Expertise in the design development and implementation of a highly structured classroom that relies heavily on visual supports and strategies
Thorough Understanding of ARD committee process Manifestation Determinations and IEPs.
Experience:
Preferred Minimum of 3 years teaching experience in a special education setting
Preferred Experience in working with special education students identified with behavioral emotional and social disabilities
Major Responsibilities and Duties:
Instructional Strategies
1. Collaborate and communicate with students parents paraprofessionals and administrators to support the academic and behavioral goals of students.
2. Implement an instructional therapeutic or skill development program for assigned students and show written evidence of preparation as required.
3. Conduct assessment of student learning styles. Plan and use appropriate instructional and learning strategies activities materials and equipment that reflect understanding of the learning styles and needs of the students assigned.
4. Employ a variety of instructional techniques and media including technology to meet the needs and capabilities of each student assigned.
5. Conduct ongoing assessments of student achievement through formal and informal testing.
Behavioral Support
6. Create a classroom environment conducive to learning and appropriate for the physical social and emotional development of students.
7. Implement classroom management strategies to promote a positive learning environment including use of positive reinforcement techniques.
8. Manage student behavior in crisis situations.
9. Support students in managing and de-escalating challenging behaviors using approved intervention strategies.
10. Track and document student behavior for data collection and progress monitoring.
Assessment
11. Compile and evaluate comprehensive student information including classroom observations personal interviews with the student teacher parents and others and relevant assessment data from students cumulative folder. Consult with parents and teacher concerning the educational needs of students and interpretation of assessment data.
12. Participate in the ARD committee to assist with the interpretation of assessment data appropriate placement and development of plans for students according to district procedures.
13. Compile maintain and file reports records and other documents as required.
14. Comply with policies established by federal and state law State Board of Education rule and local board policy. Comply with all district and local campus routines and regulations.
Other
15. Participate in faculty meeting and special events as assigned.
16. Follow district safety protocols and emergency procedures.
Supervisory Responsibilities: Direct the work of assigned instructional aide(s).
Mental Demands/Physical Demands/Environmental Factors:
Tools/Equipment Used: Personal computer and peripherals; standard instructional equipment; P.E. teachers: automated external defibrillator (AED)
Posture: Prolonged standing; frequent kneeling/squatting bending/stooping pushing/pulling and twisting
Motion: Frequent walking
Lifting: Regular light lifting and carrying (less than 15 pounds); may lift and move text books and classroom equipment
Environment: Work inside may work outside; regular exposure to noise
Mental Demands: Maintain emotional control under stress; work prolonged or irregular hours
