Basic Function:

Facilities Serviceman I is an entry level bargaining unit employee under the direction of a foreman or supervisor or other designated management employee that functions as instructed and required to assist in the construction maintenance and operation of District facilities.

Based on prior knowledge skills abilities and experience an employee may be placed at the appropriate level.

Essential Function:

  • Work independently be self-motivated and exercise sound judgment while accomplishing tasks required to maintain and improve District facilities.
  • Demonstrate positive support for and implementation of District decisions.
  • Maintain an attitude that welcomes change looks for ways to improve the work environment and seeks to improve service to other departments.
  • Promote teamwork a safe work environment and adherence to District Policies procedures and safety rules.
  • Work together in cooperation with supervisor foreman and other personnel to ensure facilities are maintained or improved and projects are completed.

Step 1 (In addition to the above)

  • Provide basic labor with mechanical aptitude and the ability to assist in service type work.
  • Assemble furniture erect fences move materials and supplies and other tasks as required.
  • Make minor repairs and improvements in a variety of construction/maintenance trades.
  • Perform general janitorial and grounds maintenance tasks as required.
  • Requires a minimum six-month period before moving to Step 2.

Step 2 (The following are additional functions to Step 1)

  • Provide general labor with mechanical aptitude.
  • Make increasingly more difficult repairs and improvements in a variety of trades.
  • Specify estimate and select material requirements.
  • Read facility drawings and specifications.
  • Establish safe construction work areas and shop practices.
  • Properly fit carpentry component joints and master all necessary tools.
  • Requires a minimum six month period must meet experience requirements and obtain Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Public Operator Pesticide License in the Rights-of-Way Weed Category prior to moving to Step 3 and other endorsements as required by the District.

Step 3 (The following are additional functions to Step 2)

  • Accomplish all building craft work at the basic level including carpentry plumbing concrete glazing interior and exterior finishes roof work minor electrical repairs and installation grounds keeping tasks irrigation installation and repair and other work as required to maintain District facilities.
  • Service and repair all building hardware at a basic level including locksets panic hardware and door closers.
  • Operate maintain and repair power tools power equipment and small engines.
  • Order furniture maintenance supplies janitorial supplies etc.
  • Set-up office layouts.
  • Specify estimate and select material requirements for minor jobs.
  • Establish safe construction work areas and shop practices.
  • Guide and direct student helpers as instructed.
  • Conduct ergonomic evaluations and/or maintain fire extinguishers.
  • Apply herbicides and other chemicals or products at the same time following all state and federal laws regulations and requirements.

Education: Step 1 and 2

  • High school diploma or GED from an accredited institution.
  • Valid Washington State drivers license.
  • First aid card including CPR Training equivalent to the State of Washington requirements for Industrial First Aid.
  • Washington State Department of Agriculture (WSDA) Public Operator Pesticide License in the Rights-of-Way Weed Category prior to moving to Step 3..
  • Obtain additional WSDA Pesticide License endorsements in categories as required by the District (Aquatic Pest Control PCO General Ornamental Weed Agricultural Weed etc.). prior to moving to Step 3.
  • Have one or both of the following as required by the District prior to moving to Step 3:
    • Certificate of training to conduct ergonomic evaluations. Must be renewed every three years.
    • Certificate of training enabling individual to maintain fire extinguishers.

Experience: Step 3

  • Four years established experience in carpentry concrete work roof application and repair sheet metal work door and window installation and repair glazing painting floor covering repair plumbing repair and fixture installation caulking and weather sealing and grounds maintenance or one or more years experience in the Facilities Serviceman step 1 and 2 position.
  • Master all necessary tools including jack hammers power and air tools and equipment associated with the above crafts.

Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Step 1 and 2

  • Write legibly and be able to maintain records and files; fill out forms.
  • Ability to use a computer for sending and receiving email maintenance management software and for general maintenance needs.
  • Knowledge and understanding of District Policies and Procedures.
  • General knowledge of the Districts Strategic Plan.
  • Demonstrated ability to follow oral and written instructions learn quickly work independently exercise sound judgment and be self motivated.
  • Safe use of construction/maintenance hand and power tools.

Other Knowledge Skills and Abilities: Step 3

  • General skill and ability in the use and repair of construction/maintenance hand and power tools.
  • Ability to guide and direct student helpers.
  • Read and update facility drawings and specifications.

Physical Requirements:

  • Work outdoors in all local climatic conditions.
  • Ascend and descend stairs and ladders.
  • Climbing to access the work as needed.
  • Work in confined space or areas of restricted movement.
  • Work in close proximity to high voltage equipment.
  • Lift and carry up to 55 pounds.
  • Sufficient physical fitness and abilities to complete normal and routine maintenance tasks.
