The Oakland Public Works Academy Trainee program was made to help people ages 18 to 30 who live in Oakland get work experience and learn job skills. The program also helps them get better at finding and keeping a job. It focuses on training people to work as Park Attendants Office Assistants and Custodians. The goal is to create a strong group of young workers who are interested in working for the City of Oaklands Public Works Department.

We are looking for someone who is:
  • Dependable and reliable with strong and consistent attendance. Showing up on time every day is very important for doing well in the training program and as an employee with the City of Oakland.
  • Adaptable and flexible able to adjust quickly to new tasks and changes. You will learn many different things in a short amount of time so being open to change and willing to take on different assignments will help you succeedboth in the program and as a future full-time employee.
  • Eager to grow and learn new skills especially if youre someone who takes initiative and wants to build a stable long-term career.
  • A strong communicator with personal responsibility able to talk and work well with your supervisor and coworkers while also taking ownership of the work you are assigned.
  • A team player who can also work independently able to help on group projects and stay focused when working on your own.
  • Organized and good at managing time able to handle many tasks set priorities and meet deadlines to keep your work on track.

What you will typically be responsible for:
  • Performing general office tasks related to your assigned work area
  • Answering phone calls and helping visitors and directing them to the right person or department
  • Representing the City in a professional and respectful way when speaking with callers or visitors
  • Using basic office equipment and making copies of documents
  • Typing and proofreading labels forms envelopes and file cards
  • Filingdocuments and keeping records organized
  • Following office procedures checking supply levels and reviewing invoices and packing slips
  • Sortingand delivering mail
  • Helpingthe public fill out forms and explaining fees permits rules and services
  • Performingother duties as assigned

Minimum Requirements for Application


Education:

Equivalent to the completion of the eighth or twelfth grade depending on assignment.


Experience:

None required.


Desirable Qualifications:
Prior experience in office work customer service or related training.
Dependable and punctual able to communicate clearly organized good at managing time and tasks comfortable using basic office equipment and computers able to work both independently and with a team and willing to learn and adapt to new tasks.

Disaster Service Workers

All employees are designated Disaster Service Workers through state and local law. Employeesare required tocomplete all Disaster Service Worker-related training as assigned and to return to work as orderedin the event ofan emergency.
