This position requires that you have a valid BC Drivers License. We do the cooking at 628 Clark Drive and take food to our Emergency Shelter on Alexander Street and also serve from a Food Truck on Hastings Street.

POSITION OBJECTIVE
The Cookposition works within the Food Services Department in providing consistent and goodquality food and service. The Cookposition is responsible for not only large volume food preparation but also thetransporting of food (large quantities) to various locations where the food isserved directly to community or to residents of the shelter. Transporting food is done via the Food Truckor with another of First Uniteds vehicles.
GENERAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES
- Ensurerefrigerators and storerooms are kept organized and maintained in the variouskitchen areas on a daily basis and that all food products are stored inaccordance with health regulations.
- Attendwork as scheduled give sufficient notice for absences to Food ServicesManager.
- Ensuressmooth operation of kitchen services during absence of Food Services Manager.
- Completescleaning according to daily and weekly schedules and dishwashing/pot washing asneeded.
- Maintainscleanliness and sanitation of equipment food storage and work areas.
- Conductyourself in a professional and positive manner.
- Ensurefood is stored in appropriate containers labeled and rotated to ensure high standardsof freshness minimizing waste and maximizing quality.
- Activelyparticipate in the environmental program and department specific initiatives inworking towards sustainable operations.

- Ensure that the kitchen area is maintained atthe highest level of cleanliness at all times especially during foodproduction. This includes: any food spills are cleaned immediately; allequipment is cleaned on a daily basis and there is no buildup of grease orother stains on all equipment.
- Helpto ensure that food deliveries have been delivered and stored according to thestandards set by the Food Services Manager.
- Followany and all recipes as they apply to any food products that you prepare orassist with as determined by the Food Services Manager.
- Ensurethe proper use of scales and measurements in all recipes portioning and foodproduction.
- Maintainintegrity of kitchen and supplies by managing access to kitchen by volunteersand non-kitchen staff.
- Maintainup to date Food Safe Certification.
- Liaisewith outside groups/volunteers and donors as required.
- Manageaccess to dry storage area.
- Ensurethat volunteers possessions are stored away from the kitchen area.
- Carryout other related duties which may be assigned from time to time.
Kitchenand Cooking Duties and Responsibilities

- Prepfood items prior to food service
- Driveor meet the food truck at the designated area and participate in the foodservice
- Provide excellent customer-oriented food serviceto community.
- Work alongside volunteers and Program Staff toensure smooth food service.
- Beable to work in varying weather and temperature conditions.
- Consistentlyfollow sanitizing and food safety protocols
- Carryout other related duties which may be assigned from time to time.
ShelterDuties and Responsibilities
- Works collaboratively with our tenant neighborsat Clark Kitchen; providing assistance or meals when required.
- Followsmenu specifications preps cooks and presents all food products with care andquality.
- Ensurefood is stored in appropriate containers labeled and rotated to ensure highstandards of freshness minimizing waste and maximizing quality.
- Washes dishes as required maintains kitchenprep area especially during food includes: any food spills are cleaned immediately and allequipment is cleaned daily to avoid buildup of grease or stains on equipment.
- Ensure that Breakfast Lunch Dinner and anyother supplies are delivered on time to the shelter.
- Pick-Up food and other food service donations donations
- Loads transit van with meals for shelter stowsafely and delivers to shelter
- Unloads transit van and works with shift supervisorand or shelter staff to serve the shelter lunch and or dinner
- Returns to the kitchen with used serving dishesand unloads and cleans dishes ensures the transit van is in clean conditionfor the next shift
- Works various shifts including weekends
- Carries out other related duties which may beassigned from time to time.
- Communicates effectively with shelter team toensure supplies are brought from the kitchen to the shelter in a timely manner.
SCOPEOF RESPONSIBILITY
Latitude
The incumbent works withthe Food Services Team. If clarificationis required it is expected that the incumbent will request further directionfrom the Food Services Manager.
INTERNAL/EXTERNAL RELATIONSHIPS
- Cooksare to seek input or to exchange information about regular duties with the FoodServices Manager while at the shelter cooks can seek input and exchangeinformation with the Shift Supervisor
- Cookswhile serving food will regularly interact with community and shelterresidents and be required to maintain a sense of order and calm in line upsof those being served.
EDUCATION WORK EXPERIENCE AND SKILLSAND ABILITIES REQUIREMENTS
- High school diploma or GED
- Completion of a culinary artsprogram or an equivalent combination of education and experience combined.
- Standard First Aid andNaloxone Training
- Experience in a non-profitrelated environment e.g. shelter group home recovery house
- Minimum two (2) years ofhospital institutional or restaurant cooking experience to include foodpreparation
- Current Food Safe Level 1certification
- Comfortable using a computernavigating Windows Microsoft Office and Outlook Email
- Having a valid driverslicense and clean drivers abstract is required.
- Ability to drive a cargo vanand/or a food truck.
- Proven ability to offerexceptional customer/client service(s) in person.
- Excellent organizationalskills with strong attention to detail exceptionally resourceful with theability to effectively problem-solve.
- Ability to prioritize managetime and engage in multiple tasks effectively and efficiently.
- Excellent verbal and writtencommunication skills
- Abilityto safely lift 23 kilograms (50 pounds) Repeatedly.
- Ability to stand for extendedperiods of time.
- Strongsense of giving back to the community; and working alongside folks experiencingmental health addictions and homelessness.
