SGM is seeking a full-time Water Resources Engineer II to work from our Glenwood Springs CO or Grand Junction CO office. This Water Resources Engineer will support a wide variety of water resource projects and maintain strong working relationships with other SGM disciplines to foster timely execution of environmental civil drinking water and wastewater projects as needed. Work could include collecting various types of water resources and water rights data in the field processing that data interpreting the results of data collected ArcGIS mapping AutoCAD design and preparing data and figures for technical reports that summarize project findings. Work may also entail designing data collection programs providing regulatory permitting support conducting water rights analysis supporting asset management projects and developing grant applications and/or project financial planning documents.
Job Duties:
Support the technical needs and execution of projects associated with SGMs water resource services including water supply planning and development ground water surface water and water quality needs
Complete project mapping using ArcGIS Pro and/or ArcGIS Desktop software
Perform tasks with AutoCAD such as preparing stage capacity tables for ponds based on survey data
Work with water attorneys and State water officials and have knowledge of Colorado water rights and water resource management to obtain permits and decrees for clients
Independently plan and implement tasks to support complex hydrology investigations
Conduct water rights analyses such as historical consumptive use analyses demand and supply analyses physically and legally available yield analyses groundwater transport analyses
Communicate effectively with SGM teams and clients
Develop and maintain client relationships and trust
Possess strong technical acumen and excellent writing skills to effectively communicate complex technical concepts to a wide audience; this includes preparing figures tables project memos project reports client correspondence and other items
Serve as a technical lead for field investigations data collection and data analysis
Field work may include: well testing water quality sampling stream flow measurement GPS data collection infrastructure inspections etc.

Bachelors degree is required (Masters degree welcomed) in an engineering discipline related to water resources: water resources engineering civil engineering environmental engineering or other related engineering discipline
3-5 years of experience in water resource consulting and management including groundwater surface water hydrology water rights and water quality services
Demonstrated knowledge and experience of Colorado water rights and/or water resource management including local state and federal drinking water wastewater groundwater and surface water rules and regulations
Proficiency with creating maps with ArcGIS Pro software
Technical understanding of the principles of hydrology or hydrogeology and ability to independently plan and conduct complex hydrology investigations
Have passed your fundamentals of engineering exam. Ability to obtain professional licensure within 4 years (professional engineer).
Well-versed in Excel including tracking sorting filtering and manipulating complex datasets; using high level formulas to concisely summarize data (VLOOKUP SUMIF etc.); creating user-friendly tables and charts to visually display complex data
Willing and able to stay in constant communication with the team supervisor and Project Managers
Able to communicate with staff including project leadership and communication of client needs
Possess initiative to meet task deliverables and to learn new skills and software relevant to projects
Comfortable meeting and interacting with a wide variety of people
Excellent technical writing skills
Valid Drivers License
Preferred Qualifications:
The qualifications listed below are not mandatory; however experience in any of these areas will be considered a strong asset. Candidates who possess relevant skills or accomplishments are encouraged to clearly highlight them in their application.
Experience with permitting and Clean Water Act compliance is preferred but not essential
Experience managing projects
Familiarity and working knowledge in the use of AutoCAD and experience with drafting and design in AutoCAD
Experience performing well tests and other hydrogeological investigations
Preferred experience with data analysis and visualization using R and Python
Preferred experience in data analysis and visualization: Utilizing programming languages such as R and Python to analyze large environmental and water quality datasets
Experience developing clear and informative data visualizations to effectively communicate findings to stakeholders (ESRI Jupyter Notebook Charts etc.)
Experience building required database infrastructure for extract transform and load (ETL) of data from various sources such as GIS databases csv files and REST APIs
Preferred experience in data management: Collect organize and maintain diverse environmental data sets ensuring data integrity and accessibility for analysis. Automating process for collecting reviewing and storing data. Experience designing and maintaining relational databases using SQL. Developing database documentation including creating entity relationship diagrams
Physical Requirements:
Prolonged periods sitting at a desk and working on a computer.
Must be able to travel to various project sites including mountain locations. This includes: being able to drive alone for long distances hiking on uneven terrain carrying heavy equipment being outside for prolonged periods of time in varied weather conditions wading in streams using waders etc.
