Emergency Medical Technician Faculty (Tenure-Track)

The Opportunity: Skagit Valley College (SVC) is seeking qualified applicants for a full-time tenure-track faculty position in theEmergency Medical Technician program.The successful candidate will demonstrate exceptional teaching skills enthusiasm for the subject matter an inclusive and equity-driven approach to teaching and learning and innovative pedagogy and teaching strategies. Candidates should be able and excited to teach hands-on and lecture-based coursework in the department. The EMT program currently has one of the highest completion rates at the college for its EMT-B Certificate program. The program has a strong network of field trainers from EMS agencies across the region and these field trainers assist the faculty with providing the students hands-on practice with vitally important skills. The program has a reputation for innovation and its faculty and field trainers are incorporating greater fidelity in simulation into the curriculum and experimenting with virtual reality to provide a wider array of simulation experiences. The college and program would like to explore the possibility of expanding into offering training to prepare graduates for the Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification. Skagits EMT program collaborates closely with the Fire Prevention Technology program especially since all Fire students must complete the EMT course and certification. The program thus has a strong network of partners on and off campus and it is a rewarding and innovative place to work.

SVC Workforce Education Faculty typically teach an equivalent of 15- 18 instructional units per quarter (3 classes) and engage in College service. This position is expected to begin in WinterQuarter January 2025.

• Serve as lead instructor for at least one EMT certification course in fall winter and spring quarters;
• Hire and train associate faculty to help teach other courses as needed;
• Serve as chair of the department and oversee course scheduling curriculum development program review and learning outcomes assessment;
• Provide direction to field trainers and EMS evaluators during course labs;
• Manage all tasks related to State of Washington course applications student applications completion certifications and certification coordination;
• Oversee coordination of National Registry certification testing and Washington State certification processes;
• Work with the Washington Department of Health and the National Registry for EMTs to monitor changing requirements new curriculum recommendations etc.;
• Keep all documentation and lead all reviews needed to maintain Skagit Valley Colleges status as a Washington State-Approved EMS Training Program;
• Manage instructional resources including planning purchasing storing and maintaining equipment and vehicles used in EMT-B courses;
• Assist the Fire Protection Technology Department Chair in maintaining strong relationships with Skagit County EMS Department other EMS providers fire agencies and the SVC EMS and Fire Advisory Committees;
• Help manage the departments Workforce Development grant which will fund the purchase of simulation and virtual reality equipment and help incorporate new simulations into the curriculum;
• Collaborate closely with the Chair of the Fire Protection Technology program to ensure that Fire students receive EMT training that meets their needsand the needs of fire districts and agencies;
• Work with unit and college leaders to explore expanding offerings and programs especially by investigating offering education and training for the Advanced EMT (AEMT) certification;
• Coordinate and supervise student internship placements with hospital emergency departments and EMS transport agencies;
• Incorporate an equity-minded approach to teaching and learning;
• Conduct ongoing development assessment and revision of curriculum that reflects innovative and inclusive pedagogy and advances in Emergency Medical Services;
• Collaborate with EMT faculty at other colleges in the region on issues of common concern;
• WorkcollaborativelywithSVCfacultyfromotherfieldstodevelopappropriatecurricula that reflect the diversity of student experience;
• Createapositivelearningenvironmentforstudentsusingdiverseteachingmethodsto support and enhance student success;

Minimum Qualifications:

• Experience teaching co-teaching or evaluating in EMT-B courses;
• Associate degree in emergency services or a related field from an accredited college or equivalent education and experience;
• Three years of experience in direct patient care working as an emergency medical technician paramedic firefighter or other first responder;
• Active certification as an EMT instructor from NAEMSE NAEMT or a similar approved entity;
• Certified as a Washington State EMS Evaluator (ESE) and have begun a qualified online course to complete the Washington Senior EMS Instructor (SEI) certification. IMPORTANT NOTE: the candidate must complete the SEI certification before teaching courses and beginning the tenure-track position. For candidates who meet most preferred qualifications but are still earning the SEI the tenure-track position could begin in April 2026 instead of January.

Salary and Benefits:

• Initial base annual salary placement for 2025-2026 ranges from $75003 - $100004 for a standard 172-day contract. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
• A standard 172-day contract is written annually for the period of September to June. Late contracts will be prorated on the basis of work days remaining in the contract year.
• This position is exempt from the overtime pay requirements of The Fair Labor Standards Act.
• This is a union-represented position subject to a Collective Bargaining Agreement. The College has a negotiated faculty wage scale in which placement on the salary structure is in accordance with the SVC Federation of Teachers Collective Bargaining Agreement.
