Job Description
The Design Services Mechanical Design & Engineering Team supports the BIW Lead Yard Services contract including DDG 51 New Construction and DDG(X) programs. This position provides support for day-to-day engineering teams including but not limited to SDRLs review of test certification and documentation calculations and investigation required for the Navy customer. This position aligns to the Business Operating System and helps keep track of major milestone deliveries along with support to the SP-01-24 policy and dept. procedures.
The right candidate is able to work independently and as part of the team to identify and remove obstacles allowing the team to achieve their goals with a focus on Improvement A3 identification and resolution.
- Safety Leadership:
- Take personal responsibility for your own safety through hazard identification and mitigation.
- Communicate safety concerns and model safe behaviors.
- Project Execution:
- Ability to interpret requirements conceptualize systems and provide basic concepts and recommendations with minimal direction.
- Read interpret and understand functional diagrams.
- Perform calculations related to pipe and fluid systems including HVAC and ventilation.
- Ability to plan organize and execute projects.
- Training and Development:
- Follow engineering processes to ensure that quality schedule and cost performance goals are achieved on all programs.
- Participate in and complete all required Company and team training as assigned.
- Team Collaboration and Communication:
- Proactively work with your supervisor to communicate obstacles and roadblocks.
- Participate in daily Muster as part of the Engineering team.
- Provide status updates on projects and all work assigned as requested.
- Continuous Improvement:
- Work with the Functional coordinator to identify work processes and communicate issues or areas to enhance. Update as required.
- Experience with A3s problem solving process and understanding of the PDCA process.
Required/Preferred Education/Training
- High School Diploma or GED required
Technician I - 0-1 years experience preferred
Technician II - 1-4 years experience required
Technician III - 5-9 years experience required

- Proven problem-solving track record and the ability to work independently.
- Positive attitude toward a team environment and demonstrated ability to function as a contributor to the engineering team.
- Seeking candidate with strong creative mindset who can provide input to future programs.
- Ability to handle multiple projects and assignments.
- Familiarity with design of US Naval Combatants specifically DDG 51 Class Ships.
- Demonstrated proficiency working with DDG 51 drawing suite.
- Strong Mechanical aptitude.
- Ability to obtain information from Catia CAD class models desirable.
- Ability to read understand and interpret blueprints/drawings required.
- Demonstrated strong attention to detail with proven ability to work independently and in a team environment.
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills.
- Ability to organize plan and execute projects desired.
- Physically able to support inclining experiments which includes day long ship visits and involves climbing ladders / stairs and quickly navigating through ship compartments while performing inspections.
- Demonstrated ability to work multiple priorities simultaneously and to completion in an organized methodical manner.
