About Type One Energy

Type One Energy Group is mission-driven to provide sustainable affordable fusion power to the world. Established in 2019 and venture-backed in 2023 the company is led by a team of globally recognized fusion scientists with a strong track record of building state-of-the-art stellarator fusion machines together with veteran business leaders experienced in scaling companies and commercializing energy technologies

If you are searching for the best new ideas and share our vision join us as a Tritium Scientist. This is what you need to know:

Location: Knoxville TN or Oxford (United Kingdom)

Salary: Highly Competitive Plus Benefits

Contract: Permanent full time

Reporting to: Director Nuclear & Fuel Cycle Engineering

Your role in the mission:

Type One Energy is seeking a highly skilled and experienced Tritium Scientist to lead in developing designing and optimizing tritium processing storage distribution and control systems in support of Type One Energys high-field stellarator designs. Ideally the candidate will have experience ranging from fundamental tritium science to practical tritium operations including a background in the design of tritium hydrogen or related systems. As a Tritium Scientist you will play a vital role in the development of our Tritium Fuel Cycle program in support of both a Fusion Pilot Plant and future Stellarator Power Plant systems.

The individual will also be expected to become the responsible officer for a key fuel cycle subsystem maturing the system in all aspects including design technology readiness and modelled behavior to support the Infinity Two stellarator reactor. This includes progressing the subsystem through successive design development fidelity gates in alignment with the overall Infinity Two program overseeing research and development activity. The role will report to the Tritium Plant Lead and will work closely with the wider Infinity Two design team contributing to an integrated and collaborative approach to system development.

  • Serve as the responsible officer for a fuel cycle subsystem ensuring clear development pathways and efficient streamlined system designs.
  • Collaborate with cross-functional teams to conceptualize design and implement cutting-edge tritium system processes in order to meet tritium fuel cycle sustainability objectives.
  • Conduct comprehensive process simulations and modelling to assess the efficiency feasibility and safety of your responsible subsystem.
  • Apply modelling expertise to simulate the behavior of key subsystems and support iterative refinement of the fuel cycle architecture.
  • Contribute to the development of fuel subsystems from a design testing and technology development perspective.
  • Analyze data and perform in-depth research to identify areas for process improvement and optimization aiming for enhanced efficiency and tritium control for your responsible subsystem.
  • Prepare technical reports mass and energy balances scopes of work presentations and publications to disseminate research/technology development findings and contribute to the scientific community.
  • Work closely with a multidisciplinary team of Scientists Engineers and Technicians to foster a collaborative environment and integrate tritium considerations into product development.
  • Collaborate with external partners including academic institutions research organizations and industry partners to explore potential collaborations and stay at the forefront of fusion technologies.
  • Assist with the preparation of protocols and procedures for the safe handling of tritium for experiments pertaining to your subsystem.
  • Be accountable for the quality and accuracy of work.
  • Provide transparent and realistic feedback on timelines resource requirements and issues to enable the timeline completion of assigned duties.

      What youll need:

      • Strong educational background in Nuclear Engineering Chemical Engineering Physics Materials Engineering or a related field.
      • Fundamental understanding of first principles for hydrogen/tritium physics and chemical/gaseous processing.
      • In-depth knowledge of tritium systems in one or more areas: catalysis reactor operation design metal hydride storage materials and/or tritium permeation barriers. Experience with getter beds cryogenic separation of gasses vacuum systems gloveboxes or hydrogen absorption materials is also a plus.
      • Knowledge in tritium transport (TMAP FESTIM COMSOL) and/or process simulation tools (e.g. Aspen Plus HYSYS) as well as other relevant software. Experience in practical high-fidelity tritium transport simulation informing design management and operation procedures is a plus but not required.
      • General knowledge of various nuclear codes and standards as well as best practices.
      • Excellent analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to interpret complex data troubleshoot technical challenges and develop innovative solutions.
