About the role

The Biological Research Facility supports all animal research at the Crick through our comprehensive animal care and use programme. The Biological Research Facility provides the Cricks laboratory animal resource and technical services. High quality multidisciplinary in-vivo and ex-vivo research support is at the heart of the BRFs philosophy and operations. The BRF is committed to improving animal welfare scientific quality care of staff and transparency for stakeholders. The BRF teams integrate husbandry of multiple species within a range of facilities using state of the art technologies via talented and skilled members of staff.

We are currently seeking a Junior Colony Coordinator to join our colony management services team. The team provides specialist breeding support and training to Crick staff including scientists and external groups.

Your role will involve overseeing the day-to-day management of an allocated number of mouse lines as well as the management of mice being rederived into the BRF. A central focus of the role is to optimisie breeding performance and outcomes while actively minimising surplus production. You will regularly review colony reports and key performance metrics to identify trends troubleshoot issues and deliver evidence-based recommendations that drive operational efficiency.

To succeed in this position youll need strong analytical skills and a genuine enthusiasm for working with data. While previous experience in rodent colony management or the life sciences sector is advantageous full training will be provided for candidates with the right data and analytical skills.

What you will be doing

Some of your key responsibilities will focus on:

  • Once trained the postholder will be responsible for the management of mice being rederived into the BRF working in collaboration with the Genetic Modification and Import teams.
    • Provides detailed genetic modification information to our external genotyping provider to enable validated protocol development.
    • Monitors and tracks genotyping results ensuring timely follow-up.
    • Ensures new strains are housed in the correct area of the facility based on their workflow stage.
    • Creates agrees and executes breeding plans to establish newly rederived lines.
    • Communicates effectively with stakeholders to manage expectations and timelines.
  • Oversees the day-to-day management of an allocated number of mouse lines on behalf of one or more scientific groups.
  • Collects analyses and reports key colony metrics (e.g. fertility scores mortality rates) identifying trends and making recommendations.

About you

You will have:

(Minimum criteria *)

  • Proven data handling and data analysis skills including a good working knowledge of Microsoft Excel. *
  • Experience of contributing effectively to the work of a team a flexible and cooperative approach to working with others. *
  • Ability to design and manage individual projects such as changing an environmental parameter and measuring the effect on breeding performance.
  • Educated to a degree level in a discipline that involves a level of data handling and statistical analysis or equivalent professional experience. *
  • A basic understanding of the Animals (Scientific Procedures) Act 1986 specifically the principles of the 3Rs and ideas of how to apply these in the context of the role. *
  • Holds or is willing to obtain a Home Office Personal Licence (PIL AB).
