Job Description

The Science & Water Quality Research Internship is a 10-week paid summer opportunity for University of Minnesota STEM college students to apply their scientific and analytical skills in a newsroom setting. Interns will work with Minnesota Star Tribune journalists at our headquarters in Minneapolis MN. to conduct research analyze data and provide scientific context that deepens reporting on environmental and public health issues in Minnesota with a particular focus on water quality.

This internship is made possible by University of Minnesota alumni Rebecca and John Siekmeier and the Local News Fund. The Siekmeiers are supporters of STEM education and have emphasized the need for agencies and institutions to uphold scientific integrity and provide clear accessible information that empowers the public to understand and protect Minnesotas environment.

Interns will be embedded in the Minnesota Star Tribune newsroom mentored by experienced reporters and editors and supported in producing research and insights that inform solutions-focused journalism. The term will be early June to early August 2026.

Compensation: Interns will earn $21.25 per hour.

Responsibilities:

We expect our Science & Water Quality Research Intern to:

  • Collect and analyze data related to water quality environmental health and sustainability.
  • Research and interpret findings from scientific studies government reports and public records.
  • Assist reporters in explaining complex scientific and technical topics to general audiences.
  • Fact-check scientific claims and provide reliable sourcing.
  • Support the newsrooms use of data visualization mapping or other tools to make scientific information accessible.
  • Collaborate with editors and reporters to incorporate research findings into stories that hold institutions accountable and highlight community impacts.

Qualifications:

  • Strong research and analytical skills with coursework or experience in a STEM discipline (e.g. environmental science biology chemistry hydrology public health engineering or related fields).
  • Demonstrated interest in water quality environmental policy or public health.
  • Ability to communicate scientific findings clearly to non-specialist audiences.
  • Familiarity with data tools (Excel Python R GIS or visualization software).
  • Open to undergraduate seniors or graduate students in STEM fields at the University of Minnesota.

  • A short portfolio of class assignments lab reports or research projects demonstrating analytical and communication skills (no journalism experience required).
  • A one-page statement describing your interest in this internship and how your background in STEM and interest in water quality could advance public understanding.
  • A resume and three references (include titles phone numbers and email addresses).
  • Two letters of recommendation uploaded with your application. At least one should come from a professor research advisor or professional mentor who can speak to your STEM skills and work ethic.
