The Social Worker for the Blind provides a range of services to individuals of all ages who are blind or visually impaired in Anson and Montgomery counties. This position delivers Independent Living Services Counseling Medical Eye Care and In-Home Services designed to promote self-reliance and equal participation in a sighted world.

Through specialized counseling teaching and skills training the Social Worker helps consumers adjust to vision loss and achieve their highest level of independence and well-beingmentally physically and financially. Services include instruction in daily living and personal care techniques home management orientation and mobility self-advocacy and the use of assistive technology. The ultimate goal is to support individuals in building the skills and confidence needed to live independently and fully engage in their communities.

The Division of Services for the Blind provides services to people who are visually impaired blind and deaf- blind to help them reach their goals of independence and employment.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Candidates now meet the minimum qualifications of a position if they have the minimum education and experience listed on the vacancy announcement.

The following Management Preferences are not required but applicants that possess these skills are preferred:

  • Experience in casework counseling and case management with individuals and groups across diverse age ranges including older adults.

  • Ability to establish effective relationships and collaborate with multidisciplinary teams to support client goals.

  • Strong communication and networking skills for engaging with professionals and community organizations (civic legal medical social and faith-based).

  • Understanding of the challenges faced by individuals with disabilities at various stages of life.


Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Masters degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution;
or
Bachelors degree in social work from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience;
or
Masters degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and one year of directly related experience;
or
Bachelors degree in a human services field from an appropriately accredited institution and two years of directly related experience;
or
an equivalent combination of education and experience.

    Military Experience
