TheLegislative Affairs Agency is recruiting for an Accounting Technician to join our team!

This recruitment will remain open until the position is filled.

The Position Summary

The Accounting Technician supports the Legislative Affairs Agencys Accounting Office with daily operations reconciliations and reporting. This role is an excellent opportunity for a motivated individual seeking to begin or grow a career in public sector accounting. The ideal candidate is eager to learn adaptable in a fast-paced environment detail-oriented and enjoys working as part of a collaborative team.

Key Responsibilities

Processing & Compliance

  • Assist with processing invoices reimbursements and travel claims accurately and promptly.
  • Review documentation for compliance with agency policies procedures and IRS/state regulations.

Reporting & Reconciliation

  • Maintain and reconcile accounting records ledgers and accounts.
  • Support preparation of financial reports schedules and year-end documentation.
  • Assist with reconciliations audits and special projects as assigned.

Customer Service & Support

  • Help track budgets expenditures and allowance accounts for legislators and committees.
  • Perform data entry into the state accounting system (IRIS) and other financial platforms.
  • Provide responsive professional service to legislators staff and vendors.

  • Strong attention to detail and organizational skills.
  • Proficiency with Microsoft Excel Word and Outlook (basic to intermediate level preferred); willingness to learn new systems.

Work/life balance is supported through:
  • The potential for flexible work schedules during interim when the legislature is not in session.
  • Agency staff may accrue as compensatory time up to 150 hours of hours worked over the standard work week. There is no cash value to compensatory time.
  • The State offers paid leave starting at 6:04 (h:mm) a pay period or 21 days a year. If you have previous time working for the State of Alaska in a leave eligible position the time will be calculated into your accrual rate.
  • 12 paid State holidays each year
  • The Legislative Affairs Agency is a family-friendly employer.
  • The Alaska State Legislature has an onsite daycare with priority given to legislative employees children.

Minimum Qualifications

  • High school diploma or equivalent required; college coursework in accounting finance or business is a plus but not required.
  • Prior bookkeeping accounting or administrative support experience is helpful but not necessarycomprehensive on-the-job training will be provided.
