The Worcester Public Schools is seeking experienced translators and/or interpreters to assist the district with the communication of essential information between staff and the families of our students. The successful applicant for the translator/interpreter position will assume the responsibility for delivering high quality translations of school documents in a timely manner and/or interpreting at meetings between school staff and families accurately and in accordance with the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for the profession. The preferred candidate will have extensive experience translating and/or interpreting in school settings and will have knowledge of Special Education terminology and procedures. Translators/Interpreters can work for the district solely as translators solely as interpreters or a combination of both depending on their qualifications and Interpreters for the following languages:Haitian Creole 2 translators/interpreters Portuguese 2 translators/interpreters Spanish 23 translators/interpreters Arabic 1 translator/interpreter Twi 1 translator/interpreter Vietnamese - 1 translator/interpreter Somali - 1 translator/interpreter Pashto - 1 translator/interpreter Swahili - 1 translator/interpreter Nepali - 1 translator/interpreter Dari - 1 translator/interpreter Persian - 1 translator/interpreter Albanian - 1 translator/interpreter DATES/TIMES/SCHEDULE:This position is a part-time position that varies from 0 to 19.5 hours per week. Translators and interpreters are assigned work on an as-needed basis up to a maximum of 19.5 hours per week and are not required to accept all work that is assigned. Most interpreting assignments are performed during school hours with some evening hours available for school and community events throughout the school year. Some interpreting assignments are performed remotely and others are in-person at different schools throughout the district as needed. For in-person assignments some travel between schools during the school day is typical with a one-hour minimum at each building/location. Translators have the flexibility to create their own schedule and work from home. ALL TRANSLATORS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:1.) Advanced proficiency in English and the target language with the ability to convey meaning while maintaining the linguistic integrity of the written message.2.) Ability to write in clear and well-structured language with no grammatical or spelling errors present in the translated document.3.) Ability to accurately translate terminology frequently used in IEPs assessment reports and other Special Education documents. Candidates will be tested on their translation skills of this specialized terminology before being hired.4.) Ability to translate a minimum of 350 words per hour.5.) Ability to demonstrate advanced word processing skills in order to replicate the formatting of source documents. Candidates will be tested on advanced formatting skills in MS Word before being hired.6.) Ability to convert documents from Word or Google Docs to PDF and merge multiple files into one. 7.) Ability to work from home independently managing multiple priorities in order to meet translation deadlines.8.) Strong work ethic and attention to detail; skilled proofreader.9.) Ability to accurately estimate the time needed to complete assignments in order not to accept more than 19.5 hours per week of translations INTERPRETERS MUST HAVE THE FOLLOWING QUALIFICATIONS:1.) National or state certification as a medical community or court interpreter or a certificate from a recognized interpreting training program that includes the fundamentals of interpreting and Code of Ethics.2.) Advanced proficiency in English and the target language with the ability to render the message from the source language to the target language accurately and completely conveying the content and spirit of the original message and taking into consideration its cultural context.3.) Knowledge and willingness to abide by the Code of Ethics and Standards of Practice for the profession.4.) Ability to accurately interpret terminology frequently used in IEP meetings 504 meetings and parent/teacher YEAR: As needed with a maximum of 19.5 hours per week.
