The National Synchrotron Light Source-II (NSLS-II) is a DOE-funded scientific user facility at Brookhaven National Laboratory. The Electronic Structure Techniques (EST) Program within the Physical Sciences & Research Operations Division offers cutting-edge capabilities for investigating and controlling the complex interplay of emergent quantum phenomena and novel electronic and magnetic properties in condensed matter materials relevant to DOE mission need areas in quantum information science and energy transmission and storage. The program provides specialized scattering and spectroscopy tools in the infrared and soft x-ray energy ranges combined with diverse experimental environments and operando conditions to inform the design of practical devices for the information and energy technologies of the future. Currently five EST beamlines are in operation and two more are under development.
Position Description
The National Synchrotron Light Source II (NSLS-II) at Brookhaven National Laboratory seeks a lead beamline scientist for the soft x-ray angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS) Imaging (ARI) beamline. The ARI beamline incorporates two endstations one for ARPES and one for RIXS and provides ultra-high spatial resolution (100nm) scanning imaging capability in each endstation via tightly-focusing mirror optics. Other spectroscopic techniques are also provided including XPS XAS inverse XAS photoelectron diffraction and fluorescence. The ARI beamline is currently under construction with expected first light in the summer of 2026.
As the Lead Beamline Scientist for ARI the successful candidate will work closely with a multidisciplinary team including beamline scientists data analysis scientists technicians engineers and other support staff to lead both the ARI user program and beamline operations. The Lead Beamline Scientist will develop a vision and strategy to advance the ARI user science program enhance the beamline capabilities and propose facility improvements and upgrades to ensure that the ARI beamline remains at the state-of-the-art.
Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
Refine and evolve the mission and technical scope of the ARI beamline by interacting effectively with the scientific user community and with the Electronic Structure Techniques Program and NSLS-II colleagues.
Grow the ARI beamlines scientific program in line with the NSLS-II strategic plan and support the facility mission with a focus on scanning imaging angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering.
Lead the safe operation of the ARI beamline and provide oversight of staff and users working at the beamline.
Supervise a team of beamline scientists assigned to the ARI beamline.
Propose and manage the ARI operating budget beam time allocation and schedule.
Oversee the design implementation maintenance and upgrade of the beamline equipment and guide the beamlines progress with advanced data management and analysis.
Collaborate with NSLS-II staff BNL scientists and/or external researchers to develop an independent scientific and/or technical research and development program that leverages or enhances the unique capabilities of the ARI beamline.
Coordinate the ARI user program with those of other NSLS-II beamlines within and outside the Electronic Structure Techniques Program that offer complementary techniques or capabilities.
Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Physics Chemistry Materials Science or other relevant fields with at least 6 years experience in synchrotron-based research with significant experience using electron spectroscopy and/or x-ray scattering techniques.
Considerable knowledge of ARPES and RIXS fundamentals and data analysis.
Familiarity with resonant inelastic x-ray scattering measurements and data analysis.
Strong publication record using ARPES and/or RIXS techniques.
Excellent written and communication skills.
Ability to interact effectively in a team environment with a diverse group of scientists engineers technical staff and users.
Preferred Knowledge Skills and Abilities:
Physics Chemistry Materials Science or other relevant fields with at least 10 years experience in synchrotron-based research with significant experience using electron spectroscopy and/or x-ray scattering techniques.
At least 3 years demonstrated successful experience with synchrotron beamline operation and user support.
Demonstrated success in the design installation and/or commissioning of a synchrotron radiation beamline.
Working knowledge of soft x-ray optics x-ray and electron detectors and/or beamline control systems (e.g. EPICS).
Recognized expertise in angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy.
Programming skills for data analysis and/or collection in Python.
Demonstrated success supervising or leading scientific or technical groups or projects.
