Scope of Responsibilities
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher shall be responsible for the implementation and support of English as an Additional Language policies and guidelines within schools. The EAL Teacher will assist in the assessment of needs to determine allocation of staff and resources for schools provide leadership in the development of regional EAL practices plan and facilitate professional development for teachers as required develop programs provide instruction and monitor the progress of EAL students within the region. Working collaboratively as members of schools Teaching Support and the Student Planning Teams the EAL Teacher will report directly to the Coordinator of Student Services.
Competencies Required
The English as an Additional Language (EAL) Teacher shall have the following competencies:
(a) The ability to apply knowledge and understanding of newcomers and EAL within an education setting;
(b) The ability to apply leadership and support in the delivery of provincial and regional EAL policies from implementation and instruction to evaluation and the effectiveness of the delivery process;
(c) The ability to provide leadership in support of initiatives programs and services focused on culturally and linguistically appropriate practices for student success;
(d) The ability to provide leadership in the collection analysis and interpretation of data related to student achievement;
(e) The ability to analyze problems and formulate recommendations to develop policies processes and practices which result in the implementation of best practices with respect to EAL students and related services;
(f) The ability to work successfully in a team environment;
(g) The ability to plan organize and facilitate professional development sessions;
(h) The ability to use current technology;
(i) The ability to apply effective strategies for problem solving and conflict resolution through strong interpersonal oral and written skills with a focus and understanding of intercultural communication;
(j) The ability to work and communicate effectively within the AVRCE with students parents/guardians and at the provincial level with the EECD;
(k) The ability to apply knowledge experience and commitment in the areas of race relations culturally relevant pedagogy cross cultural understanding human rights and diversity;
(l) The desire and ability to engage in continuing education and professional development;
(m) The ability to maintain and promote confidentiality.
