Position Overview

Under direct supervision of the Herd Manager the Field Hand is responsible for the daily care and maintenance of Pawnee Nation Cattle Program.

Essential Functions

  1. Works with the Division of Agriculture staff to ensure that all livestock receive daily care and updated records are maintained;

  1. Performs preventive maintenance and routine repairs on mechanical equipment by inspecting belts checking fluids replacing filters etc.;

  1. Uses tools ranging from common hand and power tools such as hammers hoists saws chainsaws drills and wrenches to precision measuring instruments and electrical and electronic testing devices;

  1. Maintenance of fencelines such as clearing brush building new fence and repairing old fence. Perform pasture maintenance as needed by scouting for damage cutting spraying etc. Be knowledgeable (or very motivated to learn) cow-calf care;

  1. Maintains a clean organized storage area for tools equipment supplies etc;

  1. Occasional transportation of cattle by stock trailer;

  1. Ability or willingness to learn to use heavy equipment such as tractor SkidSteer track hoe etc.;

  1. Performs emergency maintenance duties when necessary; must be willing to perform occasional late-night/ weekend work;

  1. Contributes to team effort when working cattle or larger project;

  1. Performs other duties as assigned and within the scope of the position.

Minimum:

High School Diploma or GED

Minimum:

No previous experience required for motivated learner.

Preferred:

Six (6) months to one (1) year of experience in livestock handling and care preferred.

Knowledge Skills & Abilities

Computer:

  1. Familiarity with Microsoft applications including Word Outlook Internet Explorer etc;

Communication:

  1. Ability to follow verbal and written instructions;
  2. Ability to maintain daily log of activities and observations;
  3. Ability to establish and maintain professional relationships;
  4. Ability to assist others and perform as a member of a team;
  5. Ability to establish and maintain good working relationships with individuals of varying social and cultural backgrounds.

Miscellaneous:

  1. Must meet the physical demands of the position.
  2. Must be skilled in the use maintenance and repair of hand and power tools mechanical equipment etc;
  3. Must be skilled in the care and maintenance of livestock and livestock equipment.
  4. Must demonstrate strong organizational skills with the ability to prioritize.
  5. Ability to adapt to changing priorities and work well under pressure;
  6. Must be able to lift heavy equipment;
  7. Must wear proper clothing and footwear;
  8. Ability to maintain confidentiality;
  9. Must work independently;
  10. Must possess a valid drivers license and be insurable with the Pawnee Nations insurance carrier.

Physical Demands

While performing the duties of this job the employee regularly is required to stand; walk; use hands to finger handle or feel; reach with hands and arms; and talk or hear. The employee frequently is required to sit; climb or balance; and stoop kneel crouch or crawl. The employee must occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision peripheral vision and ability to adjust focus.

Work Environment

Work is generally performed outdoors where exposure to natural weather conditions and various dusts and mists may occur. Prolonged standing and walking may be on uneven surfaces or unstable ground in remote steep rugged areas with unimproved dirt roads and trails. Situations may occur where prolonged sitting driving walking or waiting is required. Evening weekend and/or holiday work may be required. Must be on call for emergencies.
