THE STARTING SALARY FOR THIS POSITION IS LIMITED TO $53164 - $65920.Salary offers for the selected candidate are based on the candidates education and experience related to the position as well as our agency budget and equity.


The Instructor/Developer position is based in Salemburg North Carolina and plays a vital role in the delivery and oversight of specialized firearms instructor training. This position is responsible for instructing advanced firearms courses managing the operations and safety of the East Campus Range Complex and actively participating on the Firearms Advisory Group. Additional responsibilities include the review revision development and delivery of curriculum to ensure high-quality up-to-date training. The Instructor/Developer also serves as either the designated School Director or a qualified assistant for the Specialized Firearms Instructor Training Program ensuring compliance with regulatory standards and excellence in program execution.


Some travel including some overnight stays are required.

Division Information:

The North Carolina Justice Academy (with campuses in Edneyville and Salemburg) provides basic intermediate and advanced training for law enforcement officers on topics including: anti-terrorism community oriented policing criminal investigation traffic crash investigation firearms self-defense and management and supervision. Additionally the Academy provides basic intermediate and advanced training for Detention Officers and Telecommunicators on behalf of the North Carolina Sheriffs Education and Training Standards Commission.


Department Information:

TheNorth Carolina Department of Justice led by the Attorney General of North Carolina represents the state state agencies and elected officials and defends the rights of the people of North Carolina. The Department handles all state criminal appeals cases and assists district attorneys with complex criminal cases at their request. Additionally the Department of Justice includes theNorth Carolina State Crime Lab theNorth Carolina Justice Academy and theSheriffsandCriminal Justice Education and Training Standards Divisions.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities / Competencies

Management Preferences:

  • Ability to effectively concisely and accurately convey ideas in written and oral form.
  • Considerable knowledge of basic education and training methods and techniques.
  • Ability to understand and apply federal and State regulations to the scope and quality of educational programs.

Minimum Education and Experience Requirements

Masters degree in criminology criminal justice one of the social sciences or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and three years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which assigned; or Bachelor s degree in criminology criminal justice one of the social sciences or a related field from an appropriately accredited institution and six years of progressively responsible experience in the field in which instruction is to be conducted; or an equivalent combination of education arid experience.
