Job Duties

The Dean of Libraries / University Librarian at Virginia State University (VSU) provides leadership strategic direction and executive oversight for all University Libraries operations programs and personnel. This senior academic leader ensures that the libraries advance VSUs Strategic Plan support student-centered success and act as a central hub for modern library operations research and scholarly advancement.

Providing senior managers and staff across technology infrastructure acquisitions digital initiatives scholarly communications and special collections. The role fosters a culture of collaboration innovation inclusivity and operational excellence ensuring that the libraries meet the evolving needs of students faculty and the broader academic community.

Minimum Qualifications

Required Qualifications:

Graduate degree in Library and Information Science (MLS/MLIS) from an accredited institution.

Progressive leadership experience in academic libraries including oversight of staff budgets acquisitions and technology.

Demonstrated experience in strategic planning modern library operations compliance and ethical leadership.

Proven ability to collaborate on leadership teams and strategic councils to influence university priorities.

Exceptional communication organizational and personnel management skills.

Strong commitment to student-centered success faculty support and institutional advancement.

Broad understanding of library operations and services automation systems library technologies online and electronic resources instructional technologies and trends in scholarly communication and digital initiatives.

Significant experience in financial planning and budget administration; strategic planning; and assessment of library programs operations and services.

Demonstrated knowledge of emerging areas of librarianship including the capabilities and future trends of service models library technologies and systems to maximize discovery and access to scholarly resources as well as a holistic understanding of academic libraries and how different units work together.

Professional commitment to user-focused service orientation.

Demonstrated commitment to developing a diverse and equitable library culture and staff and evidence of work with a diverse community.

Successful experience cultivating relationships and partnerships within and outside of the library and university; and a record of scholarly or other appropriate professional activity.

Ability to think creatively and demonstrate creative problem-solving.

Effective consultative negotiation and communication skills.

Ability to manage multiple concurrent projects.

Grant writing experience.

Record of scholarly and professional achievement including active participation in professional organizations and associations.

Additional Considerations

Preferred Qualifications:

Doctorate or additional advanced degree in information science higher education administration or related field.

Executive-level training or certification in library systems procurement or leadership.

Experience with open access digital repositories and scholarly communications initiatives.

Proven record in space planning capital projects or major technology/modernization initiatives.

Active participation in institutional leadership councils or committees shaping academic priorities.
