General Description

Under general supervision this position performs general technical protective service work in the fields of fire suppression prevention and emergency medical services. Reports to a Company Officer assigned to the station.

Essential Functions

Provides emergency response life support and other fire and rescue duties. Offers immediate emergency care assesses patient conditions administers appropriate treatment (including emergency invasive procedures) and transports patients to medical facilities. May mentor Firefighter/Medic.


Assists in fire prevention rescue and fire suppression duties. Performs rescues from hazardous sites such as auto accidents and collapsed buildings and operates fire apparatus and equipment.


Performs clerical and administrative functions to include preparing reports and completing forms using computers and approved software.


Conducts housekeeping duties at assigned stations and performs inspections maintenance and minor repairs on firefighting and emergency medical services apparatus and equipment.


Performs other duties as assigned.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

Required Knowledge

Fire Suppression Knowledge of practices pertaining to fire suppression to include safety and infection control procedures pertaining to the use and operation of fire apparatus equipment tools and protective gear. Knowledge of the proper use and basic maintenance of a Self-Contained Breathing Apparatus (SCBA). Comprehensive knowledge of incident command procedures vehicle operations and basic maintenance needs including fire engine aerial and medical apparatus.


Emergency Medical Services Knowledge of emergency medical care including trauma basic life support (BLS) advanced cardiac life support (ACLS) principles and practices.


Safety/Security Knowledge of safety rules regulations procedures and practices as outlined in department directives as they relate to apparatus equipment tools and protective gear. Maintains situational awareness.


Customer Service General knowledge of principles and processes for providing customer services. This includes setting and meeting quality standards for services and evaluation of customer satisfaction.


Required Skills

Interpersonal Relationships Develops and maintains cooperative and professional relationships with employees managers and representatives from other departments and organizations. Shares knowledge with staff for mutual and departmental benefit.


Judgement/Decision Making- Anticipates identifies and evaluates potentially dangerous unusual or deviating situations and exercises appropriate judgment to establish priorities and take prompt action for problem resolution.


Required Abilities

Communication - Ability to communicate effectively including the preparation of reports and logs and the use of radio communications including appropriate channels and basic radio communication codes. Ability to listen and understand directions information and ideas presented

verbally and in writing.


Time Management Ability to plan and organize daily work routine. Establishes priorities for the completion of work in accordance with sound time management methodology.


Geography- Ability to read maps basic plans and diagrams such as evacuation or building floor

plans.


Education Training and Experience

Requires a minimum of a High School or General Education Diploma (GED) or a combination of education and training. Requires the completion of an approved and recognized regional fire academy and certification as EMT-B.

Additional Requirements

Must maintain a valid vehicle operators license and an acceptable driving record.

As a condition of continued employment must be certified and maintain following certifications:

  1. NREMT-Basic
  2. CPR
  3. Emergency Vehicle Operations Course S-3
  4. ICS
  5. VDFP Certified Firefighter II
  6. Hazardous Materials Operations
  7. Mayday Operations

WORKING CONDITIONS

The working environment is both indoors and outdoors presenting conditions that may include exposure to adverse weather and hazardous pollutants. Must be able to complete physically demanding tasks in all-weather situations and conditions. Significant exposure to undesirable working conditions such as:

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:

While performing the duties of this job the employee is frequently required to sit; stand; walk; use hands to finger handle or operate objects tools or controls; and reach and stretch with hands and arms with a full range of motion. The employee is required to climb or balance; jump; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; talk and taste or smell. May be required to sit or stand for several hours each day but will also need mobility and ability to stand and walk continuously for long periods of time.

The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move more than 175 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus. Specific hearing abilities required by the job include the ability to distinguish faint sounds distance and direction. Must be able to wear and preform in self-contained breathing apparatus (SCBA).

All employees in this position are required to pass an annual physical provided by the County.

EMPLOYEE UTILIZATION IN ADVERSE WEATHER AND EMERGENCY CONDITIONS

All King William County employees are subject to assignment of specific positions and tasks during a Declared Emergency as support personnel by the County Administrator. Once assigned this would be the same as a regular work assignment and all policies and procedures for duty assignments apply.
