Cultural Resources Assistance

Description

The Great Basin Institute (GBI) seeks to hire (1) Archival Technician to join the Cultural Resource Services (CRS) Program and work cooperatively with the National Park Service and Sand Creek Massacre National Historic Site. The purpose of the position is to protect maintain preserve and provide access to the collection.

The Archival Technicians primary responsibilities/duties include but may not be limited to the following:

  • Accessioning arranging preserving and providing reference services for and disposition of these documents.
  • Catalogs and indexes a large variety of materials.
  • Examines for content and identifies and selects significant concepts and characteristics to be recorded for use in automated retrieval.
  • Determines locations and subjects for additional level of coding for source materials.
  • Consulting with professional staff as necessary.
  • Usage of the NPS automated cataloging system and procedures to catalog and manage archival collections including entering data into systems.
  • Assists in the preparation of finding aids.
  • Ensures proper maintenance storage control and record management of materials.
  • Monitors climate control systems and prepares proper folders sleeves boxes and other physical housing in order to assure maximum preservation organizational integrity and accessibility for use.
  • Assists in the preparation of preservation plans for collections and assists with basic preservation treatments such as humidification flattening and cleaning plans and maps;
  • Preparing manuscripts for microfilming; and/or surveying photographic negatives.
  • Unpacks new collections; reviews the collections for mold vermin and insects;
  • Assists the records manager and the curator in the identification of official records.
  • Makes archival and manuscript collections including audio-visual and electronic records available for study and reference.
  • Prepares special studies compiles reports and performs specialized research as necessary to further the proper management of historic document collections or to further the body of area history.
  • Assists with special projects such as microfilming.
  • Performs a variety of clerical functions in support of the organization.

The work is usually performed in a museum storage area work space research room or office setting. The incumbent may work with potentially dangerous collections that have biological contamination such as mold insects or vermin requiring protective dust masks gloves and laboratory coats.

LOCATION

The duty station for this position is based in Eads the town there are many historic houses and buildings that are still in use to this day; on Maine Street there are many places to visit to learn more about the towns history. A few miles south of Eads is an area popular with wildlife fishing and water enthusiasts; four reservoirs Neegronda Neenoshe Neesopah Neeskah and are all located nearby.

Jacksons Pond and John Martin Reservoir State Park welcome picnickers hikers bikers fishers and birders who can spot kingfisher raptors shorebirds and other wildlife. Nearby cities include Lamar CO (36 miles South) and Denver CO (173 miles Northwest).


Timeline

  • Ideal start date: Early to mid-December 2025
  • 8 month or 34 week appointment.
  • Work schedule: Full time 40 hours/week. Daily schedule is flexible.

COMPENSATION AND BENEFITS

Compensation: $24.02/hr no overtime;

Qualifications

To perform this job successfully employees must be able to satisfactorily carry out each essential duty.   • Must provide a valid drivers license and possess a clean driving record;
  • Applicant must be a US citizen or Permanent Resident;
  • Applicant must be willing to undergo and must pass required criminal history checks;
  • Substantial practical and technical knowledge of archival methods procedures and technology and the skill to apply that knowledge with only general supervision in order to solve practical problems in a wide range of functions in the administration of historic documents.
  • Strong oral and written communication skills and the ability to communicate effectively with team members and colleagues;
  • Knowledge of laws and legal precedents in relation to the management use and distribution of information such as copyright state and federal privacy and publicity legislation Freedom of Information Act etc. and the effect of related legislation on access to specific information.
  • Knowledge of archival-related standards and procedures including those dealing with records surveying; appraisal and evaluation; accessioning cataloging and description; arrangement; preservation including microfilming storage environments rehousing standards handling procedures and treatment standards; information exchange and automation; and reference access services and public programs.
  • Knowledge of NPS cataloging and record keeping systems needed for proper control of archival and manuscript historic document collections. Knowledge of specialized terminology and resources particularly archival descriptive standards for data exchange data contents and data values to ensure accurate coding and cataloging.
  • Basic knowledge of archival deterioration processes and archival health and safety procedures.
  • Broad knowledge of NPS programs to respond to public requests.
  • Basic knowledge of historic and modern media and information formats including graphic print photomechanical print architectural drawing duplication formats electronic media sound recording motion picture videotape photographs and duplication processes and techniques and their preservation and reformatting requirements.
  • Skill in arranging and describing simple archival collections following the principles of original order and provenance.
  • Skill in producing a simple folder list index and finding aids for relatively uncomplicated archival collections.
  • Knowledge of database management word processing and specialized software programs essential to archival description management and reference.
  • Skill in communicating information in a clear and concise manner including the ability to write clear research reports and descriptions of documentary materials and respond to both internal and external inquiries.


Successful applicants must complete a Department of Interior (DOI) Background Investigation (BI) or submit paperwork to NPS human resources indicating an active and fully adjudicated BI has already been completed prior to beginning position.
