The Department of Transportation and Public Facilities (DOT&PF) Central Region is looking for an Engineer/Architect 1/2 Flex (Geotechnical Engineer) in Anchorage to help us Keep Alaska Moving!

Base Salary Information:

Engineer/Architect 1 $3776.00 / bi-weekly (OT Ineligible)
Engineer/Architect 2 $4032.80 / bi-weekly (OT Ineligible)

What you will be doing:

The Engineer 1/2 Flex will be part of a team in the Central Region Materials Section in Anchorage that collaborates to develop Geotechnical Recommendations in support of bid-ready documents for highway and aviation-related transportation projects. The incumbent will supervise and work closely with three Engineering Assistants while reviewing plan sets creating drill plans and coordinating with other design staff. This position primarily involves office work with occasional trips to project sites sometimes in remote areas accessible by small aircraft.

The Central Region Materials Section is a team of over 20 members including Geotechnical Engineers Engineering Assistants Engineering Geologists and Lab staff. Together they collaborate to develop geotechnical design reports and recommendations supporting highway and aviation design projects. The incumbent will play a key role in this team providing site-specific geotechnical recommendations to advance these projects.

The working environment you can expect:
Our office is located at 5750 East Tudor Road in Anchorage which is a satellite office to our main branch at 4111 Aviation Avenue. The position has a private office within the Central Region Materials Lab building. The Tudor office is also located right by Far North Bicentennial Park with easy access to hiking & biking trails. Daily work is centric to writing geotechnical recommendations in collaboration with peers and other functional staff that are friendly and enthusiastic about their work; and overseeing three of the sections Engineering Assistants. Occasional field work is also performed on an as needed basis in support of program projects.

Who we are looking for:
We are looking for an individual with the following desired core competencies that will contribute to their success in this position:

Geotechnical Engineering: Knowledge of the concepts principles theories and methods related to the investigation and evaluation of subsurface soil or geologic conditions and properties for the purpose of designing stable foundation systems earthen structures or the remediation of subsurface conditions.
Managing Performance: Takes responsibility for employees performance by setting and communicating expectations and goals that are specific and measurable tracking progress against the goals supporting employees efforts to achieve job goals (by providing resources removing obstacles acting as a buffer etc.) ensuring feedback and addressing performance problems and issues promptly.
Writing: Recognizes or uses correct English grammar punctuation and spelling; communicates information (for example facts ideas or messages) in a succinct and organized manner; produces written information which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience.

Special Note:

Valid Drivers License is required.
Requires occasional travel to project sites within southcentral Alaska (normally 1-2 trips per summer month). This may include flying to remote communities in small aircraft with infrequent need for overnight stays with minimal accommodations. Requires regular site inspections which can occur in adverse weather conditions.

Engineer/Architect 1
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect.

Note: Positions in this class require professional registration as either an Engineer or an Architect. The employer will designate which professional field is required for each position.

Special Note:
Persons not registered in the State of Alaska must be registered in a state recognized by the State Board of Registration for Architects Engineers and Land Surveyors eligible for comity in accordance with AS 08.48.191(b). Persons employed under this provision must become registered in Alaska within one year of hire and sign an agreement to this effect as a condition of employment.

Engineer/Architect 2
Registration as a Professional Engineer (PE) or Architect and one year of professional experience as an Engineer/Architect 1 or Engineering Associate with the State of Alaska or the equivalent.

Special Note:

FLEXIBLY STAFFED
This position is flexibly staffed. This vacancy may be filled at either the Engineer/Architect 1 or Engineer/Architect 2 level depending on the applicants training and/or experience. The full range of salaries is listed above. Starting salary will be determined by the level the position is hired at.If filled at a lower level promotion to the higher level will occur upon successful completion of the probationary period and required training as well as the applicant meeting the minimum qualifications of the higher job class.
