Job Description

POSITION SUMMARY

Under general supervision and with direction performs highly skilled tasks in the mechanical repair and maintenance of automobiles light and heavy-duty trucks tractors police squads firefighting apparatus and other related City equipment with a positive and team orientated attitude toward success. Works under the close supervision of the Fleet Maintenance Foreman

ESSENTIAL DUTIES & RESPONSIBILITIES

  • Generally performs activities associated with the general maintenance improvement and repair of City fleet related activities.
  • Diagnoses mechanical and/or electrical malfunctions and defects by operating diagnostic testing equipment including handheld scanners and multi-meter testers. Road tests vehicles to locate operational problems and check repair and maintenance before returning to service.
  • Performs preventative maintenance and mechanical repairs and overhauls to gasoline diesel and hydraulic powered vehicles and equipment including squad cars City staff cars trucks tractors with backhoe and end loader attachments and dump trucks with snow plows salt spreaders and other applicable attachments.
  • Follows all safety regulations policies and procedures. Reports all unsafe conditions and acts to supervisor. Reports all accidents to the supervisor immediately whenever possible but no later than end of the employees work shift. Follows recognized safe work practices.
  • Diagnose and repair of HVAC systems on vehicles and equipment.
  • Reads repair and wiring diagrams for the purpose of repairing mechanical devices.
  • Performs motor tune-ups using standard testing equipment.
  • Inspects overhauls and assembles automotive electrical equipment.
  • Repairs and overhauls brakes transmissions differentials front and rear axle assemblies and repairs and installs hydraulic controls and related equipment.
  • Engages and observes mechanical devices engines and equipment in operation and listens to their sounds to locate causes of trouble; performs other tests to locate defects and road tests all equipment before returning it to service.
  • Dismantles devices to gain access to and remove defective parts; adjusts functional parts of machinery and equipment.
  • Examines form and texture of parts to detect imperfections; inspects used parts to determine changes in dimensional requirements.
  • Repairs and reinforces welds on all equipment; designs fabricates and installs miscellaneous hardware on various equipment using a portable arc welder shop arc welder wire feed welder and grinding and cutting devices.
  • Performs some auto and equipment body repair and painting work; replaces corroded or damaged body parts.
  • Repairs replaces or adjusts defective parts such as brakes spark plugs throttle bodies oxygen sensors etc.
  • Installs special functional and structural parts in devices.
  • Uses forklift during various public works projects.
  • Uses repairs and maintains shop tools and equipment.
  • Performs all other related duties and assignments as assigned.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

  • High school diploma or equivalent (G.E.D) supplemented with vocational or technical training in the area of auto mechanics with 3 or more years of experience repairing and maintaining automotive/diesel vehicles and heavy equipment; or an equivalent combination of education and experience sufficient to successfully perform the essential duties of the job such as those listed above.
  • Possession of a valid Illinois Commercial Drivers License Class A with air brake and tanker endorsements or the ability to obtain within 120 days of employment
  • This position requires employees to respond to emergency and non-emergency situations outside normal business hours.
  • Expected hours of work are either Monday-Friday 7AM 3:30 PM; or Monday-Friday 3:00 PM 11:00 PM; however may require the ability to work shifts outside normal working hours as needed.
  • Ability to be on call and work overtime related to work load or emergencies.
  • The ability to determine the origin of malfunctions in vehicles and equipment and take corrective action.
  • Ability to communicate effectively both orally and in writing and prepare requisite service records.
  • Ability to establish and maintain satisfactory working relationships with other City personnel.
  • Extensive knowledge of occupational hazards and precautionary measures in a vehicle maintenance environment; ability to learn understand and adhere to all applicable safety precautions and procedures
  • Working knowledge of the components of electronic starting charging and ignition systems.
  • Working knowledge of hydraulics.
  • Knowledge of garage methods shop practices and the techniques tools diagnostic testing equipment and machinery used in vehicle and equipment maintenance and repair.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS/QUALFICATIONS

  • Must own complete set of mechanics tools.
  • Preferred-ASE Certification in the following repair fields: Automobile/Light Truck Engine Repair Suspension and Steering Brakes Electrical/Electronic Systems Heating and Air Conditioning and Engine Performance; ASE Certification Medium/Heavy Truck; EVT Certified
  • State of IllinoisClass A (CDL) Drivers License with Airbrake and Tanker endorsement must be maintained by the position holder at all times.

EQUIPMENT USED

Requires the frequent use of motorized vehicles and equipment including tractor loader dump truck pickup truck utility truck skid steer with various attachments saws pumps compressors grinders generators forklifts common hand power tools shovels wrenches mobile radio and cellular phone.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS

While performing the duties of this job the employee is regularly required to use hands to finger handle feel or operate objects tools or controls and reach with hands and arms. The employee frequently is required to stand and talk or hear. The employee is occasionally required to walk; sit; climb or balance; stoop kneel crouch or crawl; and smell. The employee must frequently lift and/or move up to 50 pounds and occasionally lift and/or move up to 100 pounds. Specific vision abilities required by this job include close vision distance vision color vision peripheral vision depth perception and the ability to adjust focus.

WORKING CONDITIONS

While performing the duties of this job the employee frequently works near moving mechanical parts or in outside weather conditions. The employee is occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions fumes toxic or caustic chemicals. The noise level in the work environment is moderate to loud on occasion. The employee occasionally works in high precarious places.
