Bishop Hartley High School Long Term Substitute Teacher-English Dates: Approximately November 17 2025 - February 19 2026 Catholic Preferred but Not Required BISHOP HARTLEY HIGH SCHOOL 1285 Zettler Road Columbus Oh 43227 Job Title: Long Term Substitute Teacher - English School: Bishop Hartley High School Responsible to: Vice Principal of Academics JOB SUMMARY The long-term substitute teacher is responsible for providing classroom coverage for a teacher who is absent for an extended period of time. This specific position will cover the maternity leave of a full-time English teacher. The long-term substitute teacher works the regular hours of the absent classroom teacher during his or her this case the substitute teacher will report to Bishop Hartley from 7:30 am 3:30 pm each instructional day Monday Friday and provide coverage for high school English classes. Teaches content and skills in subject area utilizing curriculum designated by the Office of Catholic Schools in the Diocese of Columbus 2. Develops and implements lesson plans and supplementary materials and delivers classroom instruction in a manner compatible with Bishop Hartleys educational mission Diocesan standards and the Diocesan Course of Study 3. Evaluates each students progress in meeting the course standards prepares report cards and keeps appropriate records including student attendance 4. Establishes and maintains standards of student behavior needed to provide an orderly productive classroom environment 5. Identifies student needs and cooperates with other faculty and staff to support and when necessary refer students in need of learning health and wellness social and/or emotional support to qualified professionals in the building 6. Communicates with students parents and school counselors on student progress 7. Supervises students in class and during assigned out-of-classroom activities during the working day 8. JOB SUMMARY The Substitute Teacher as a faith-filled person willingly responds to the gospel challenge of Jesus Christ and to teach as Jesus did that is to spread the gospel message to build community and to be of service to others. Substitute Teachers assist to prepare the students minds hearts and hands to live wisely and generously in a technologically complex and interdependent world. The Substitute Teacher is in an as-needed position. A classroom in a comfortable environment with a moderate noise level is provided along with appropriate curriculum and instructional aides. This person will work in full cooperation with the principal colleagues support staff and pastor/superintendent. While performing the duties of this job the substitute teacher may work in outside as well as inside weather conditions. - Takes instructions from school office and lead teacher about handling classroom instruction.
- Reads and understands curriculum and lesson plans. Refers to the lesson plan left by lead teacher and ensure that appropriate measures are taken to follow it. Follows up on any instructions left for the lead teacher and ensure that they are followed appropriately.
- Ensures that classroom instruction is handled according to the schools policies goals and objectives.
- Manages student behavior and classroom order and ensure that a climate of fairness and respect is promoted.
- Understands and appropriately uses varied instructional groupings strategies and styles.
- Takes necessary actions and reasonable actions to ensure the safety of students materials and school equipment.
- Evaluates accomplishments of students using and understanding a variety of assessment techniques including progress reports and records as required.
- Recognizes and respects the primary role of the parents in the education of their children
- Creates substitute teaching/instruction report at the end of each day and hand in to the principal.
