Job Summary

The Assistant Geologist IIHR Hydroscience and Engineering will contribute to the mission of the Iowa Geological Survey (IGS) within IIHR Hydroscience and Engineering by actively engaging in ongoing (and future) projects focused on geologic mapping data management and interpretation and public outreach. As an Assistant Geologist with the IGS the selected applicant will assist with the compilation of various types of mapping products such as surficial and bedrock geology groundwater vulnerability and bedrock topography. Additional project responsibilities will be determined by funding sources and this person will also collaborate on other IGS projects as required.

This is a 1-year specified term position.

Specific Job Duties and Tasks:

Assisting with mapping the surficial and bedrock geology of areas determined by the Iowa State Mapping Advisory Committee. Responsibilities include fieldwork data collection and management digitization using ArcGIS developing geologic cross-sections and stratigraphic charts and summary reports. Assist other IGS staff with their mapping projects.
Work closely with principal investigator(s) (PI) and assist with report writing data compilation project coordination and community outreach.
Fieldwork typically includes assisting with drilling sediment cores studying field exposures and visiting quarries.
Describe sediment cores and well chip samples.
Assist IGS staff with existing research needs this may include the development of proposals the interpretation of data and the preparation of reports.
Collaborate with faculty and students at the University of Iowa School of Earth Environment and Sustainability (SEES) as well as other research institutions to advance the understanding of the Quaternary stratigraphy of Iowa.
Assist IGS staff in delineating the protocol for as well as the planning and execution of the requisite data collection for various projects.
Ensure that project goals and timelines are being met and actively communicating progress and challenges with collaborating staff.
Coordinate and manage equipment and facilities as needed to complete project tasks. Monitor environmental risks quality control and take action as necessary. Follow protocol related to equipment tool and facilities use.
Work effectively alone and collaboratively with other IGS staff project staff and external investigators/stakeholders.
May oversee train and potentially supervise students and interns on various projects both in the office and in the field.

Education Requirement:

Bachelors degree in geology or a closely related discipline or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

Foundational understanding of Quaternary geology and stratigraphic principles an aptitude for describing geologic samples and the ability to interpret geologic map products.
Strong interpersonal skills and a demonstrated ability to work collaboratively with others in a research environment.
Excellent written and verbal communication skills and the ability to effectively communicate scientific information to a variety of audiences.
Familiarity with general geologic and hydrogeologic field methodology and terminology.
Proficiency with the Microsoft Office suite of software.
Ability to travel throughout Iowa and the surrounding region including overnight stays and driving in inclement weather. A valid drivers license is required as is continued compliance with the University of Iowa Fleet Safety Program driving standards (University of Iowa Operations Manual Part V Chapter 19).
Ability to handle the physical aspects of conducting fieldwork including but not limited to: working in hot cold or wet weather walking/hiking long distances (potentially in rough terrain) and lifting/carrying awkward and/or heavy items.
Proficiency with ESRI ArcGIS software.

Desired Qualifications:

Work experience or coursework with a geologic mapping focus.
Work experience at a geological agency (state or federal level).
Experience working on projects funded by federal agencies such as the USGS.
Proficiency with Adobe programs (Illustrator Photoshop InDesign).
Experience with education and outreach activities.
