The Department of Sociology College of Social Sciences (CSS) University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) in Honolulu Hawaii invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3). This is a 9-month full-time permanent tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1 2026 subject to position clearance and availability of funds.
We are seeking a candidate with a commitment to contribute to one or more of our departments other areas of specialization which are Race Ethnicity Gender and Class; Asia Pacific and Hawaii in Regional and Global Contexts; Crime Law and Social Control; and Nationalism Globalization and Sustainability.

- Develop a research record; undertake research/scholarly or creative projects in the field or branch of learning represented by and consistent with the goals of the UHM CSS.
- Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and/or books.
- Teach introductory and upper-level graduate and undergraduate courses including courses on medical sociology and quantitative methods.
- Seek extramural funding.
- Maintain a professional level of performance and productivity in assigned areas of teaching research and service.
- Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in quantitative methods as well as the candidates areas of interest.
- Contribute to development activities at the discipline department and campus levels.
- Work independently and with colleagues to select develop and revise curricular materials instructional techniques and assessment strategies at the course credential and/or discipline levels.
- Provide service and leadership to the department college university and community.
- Participate in professional and self-development activities.
- Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.
Minimum Qualifications:
- A Ph.D. in sociology or a related field. ABDs will be considered only if all degree requirements will be met; ABDs must submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that the dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire; Ph.D. degree is conferred by date of hire;
- Demonstrated ability to conduct research;
- Ability to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in quantitative methods;
- Demonstrated ability to mentor students;
- Ability to contribute to our specialization in Health Aging and Medical Sociology;
- Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.
Desirable Qualifications:
- Demonstrated teaching experience in both sociology of health and quantitative methods.
- Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach graduate and undergraduate students with varying backgrounds.
