The Department of Sociology College of Social Sciences (CSS) University of Hawaii at Manoa (UHM) in Honolulu Hawaii invites applicants for the position of Assistant Professor (F-3). This is a 9-month full-time permanent tenure-track faculty appointment to begin August 1 2026 subject to position clearance and availability of funds.


We are seeking a candidate with a commitment to contribute to one or more of our departments other areas of specialization which are Race Ethnicity Gender and Class; Asia Pacific and Hawaii in Regional and Global Contexts; Crime Law and Social Control; and Nationalism Globalization and Sustainability.

More information about the Department of Sociology is available at and Responsibilities:

  1. Develop a research record; undertake research/scholarly or creative projects in the field or branch of learning represented by and consistent with the goals of the UHM CSS.
  2. Publish research in peer-reviewed journals and/or books.
  3. Teach introductory and upper-level graduate and undergraduate courses including courses on medical sociology and quantitative methods.
  4. Seek extramural funding.
  5. Maintain a professional level of performance and productivity in assigned areas of teaching research and service.
  6. Supervise and mentor undergraduate and graduate students in quantitative methods as well as the candidates areas of interest.
  7. Contribute to development activities at the discipline department and campus levels.
  8. Work independently and with colleagues to select develop and revise curricular materials instructional techniques and assessment strategies at the course credential and/or discipline levels.
  9. Provide service and leadership to the department college university and community.
  10. Participate in professional and self-development activities.
  11. Other duties as assigned by the Department Chair.

Minimum Qualifications:

  1. A Ph.D. in sociology or a related field. ABDs will be considered only if all degree requirements will be met; ABDs must submit a letter from their committee chair attesting that the dissertation and all degree requirements will be completed prior to the date of hire; Ph.D. degree is conferred by date of hire;
  2. Demonstrated ability to conduct research;
  3. Ability to teach introductory and advanced undergraduate and graduate courses in quantitative methods;
  4. Demonstrated ability to mentor students;
  5. Ability to contribute to our specialization in Health Aging and Medical Sociology;
  6. Demonstrated ability to maintain professionalism in meeting and conferring with others.

Desirable Qualifications:

  1. Demonstrated teaching experience in both sociology of health and quantitative methods.
  2. Demonstrated ability to mentor and teach graduate and undergraduate students with varying backgrounds.
