City of Greeley: Work Live and Play in Greeley: Summary

The City of Greeley is seeking a Maintenance Technician or Water Systems Technician l IV to join the Wastewater Collections team in the Water and Sewer Department. The Technician will report to the Crew Supervisor I - Wastewater Collections and will assist in the routine maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and other related equipment and facilities. The Maintenance Technician will inspect and perform necessary repairs and perform preventive maintenance necessary to maintain sanitary sewer lines. The position requires field work involving working in confined spaces excavation trenches and near the operation of heavy equipment. Specific tasks may involve operating various equipment keeping logs on corrections ordering and installing replacement parts -by duty for emergency call-in is rotated among division employees.

Experience Education and Skills

Minimum Requirements

All Levels:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (required for licensure in the State of Colorado)

  • Basic understanding and knowledge of working with methods materials and equipment used in utility maintenance work (e.g. metal detectors measuring instruments pick shovels probe rods dump trucks and heavy equipment etc.).
  • Must be available and able to commit to being on-call as part of a rotational schedule including nights weekends and holidays.

  • Must be willing to respond to after-hour emergencies within 45 minutes even if not on call.

Additional Qualifications:

Maintenance Technician:

  • Current Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) or the ability to obtain within six (6) to nine (9) months of hire.

Water System Technician I:

  • One (1) month of related experience.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) required.
  • Wastewater Collection System Operator 1 Certification.

Water Systems Technician II:

  • Two (2) years of related experience.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) required.
  • Wastewater Collection System Operator 2 Certification.

Water Systems Technician III:

  • Three (3) years of related experience.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) required.
  • Wastewater Collection System Operator 3 Certification.

Water Systems Technician IV:

  • Four (4) years of related experience.
  • Class A Commercial Drivers License (CDL) required.
  • Wastewater Collection System Operator 4 Certification.

OR

  • Any combination of related education experience certifications and licenses that will result in a candidate successfully performing the essential functions of the job

AND

  • Possession of a valid drivers license.

Preferred

  • Prior water sewer or streets maintenance related experience preferred.
  • Prior mechanical experience is preferred.
  • Prior experience and comfortability working in a heavy traffic environment preferred.
  • Flagger or Traffic Control certification.
  • Confined Space Entry training or certification.

Knowledge Skills and Abilities

  • Knowledge of confined space entry traffic control trench safety and other utility safety procedures.

  • Knowledge of water system construction repair and preventive maintenance practices.

  • Ability to read and interpret maps electrical schematics and technical drawings.

  • Familiarity with hand tools power tools and maintenance equipment.

  • Ability to respond to water system emergencies and participate in on-call rotations

  • Ability to adapt to changing priorities and respond to emergencies.

  • Knowledge of workplace safety practices and procedures.

  • Skill in operating maintenance tools and equipment safely and effectively.

  • Basic computer skills for work order systems email and documentation.

  • Recordkeeping and documentation skills including use of utility work order systems.

  • Time management skills to complete multiple tasks and meet deadlines.

  • Strong communication and teamwork skills.

  • Ability to work independently with minimal supervision.

  • Ability to maintain a positive and professional attitude while working with staff and the public.

  • Computer skills includingthe ability to utilize Microsoft Office programs (i.e. Microsoft Teams and Outlook etc.) CityWorks or similar program and the ability tolearn and experiment with new software and systems.

Travel

  • Category B-Regular Local/Field Based Travel: This position requires regular travel within the County and nearby cities. Employees frequently travel to field sites client locations or other City buildings as part of their job duties. Access to a personal or City fleet vehicle may be required.

Essential Functions

  • Performs routine maintenance of sanitary sewer lines and on other related equipment and facilities.
  • Inspects and performs necessary repairs and preventative maintenance on sanitary sewer lines.
  • Works in confined spaces excavation trenches and near the operation of heavy equipment.
  • Operates various equipment.
  • Creates and maintains logs on maintenance corrections ordering of supplies and installation of replacement parts.
  • Participates in stand-by duty for emergency call-ins on a rotational basis.
  • Completes work orders daily within CityWorks.
  • Performs other duties as assigned.

Supervisory Responsibilities: N/A

Work Environment

  • Outdoor work performed in all weather conditions.

  • Frequent exposure to outdoor conditions includingextreme temperatures (below 32 degrees or above 100 degrees) for periods of more than one hour.
  • Regular work in high-speed traffic areas while setting up equipment or performing maintenance.
  • Exposure to noise from machinery equipment and construction activities.

  • Exposure to respiratory hazards such as dust fumes mists gases odors airborne particles/pathogens or poor ventilation.

  • Frequent work in hazardous environments including trenches confined spaces shoring systems construction sites heavy equipment areas and uneven rocky or slippery surfaces.

Physical Requirements

  • Ability to stand for extended periods bend twist and reach to load/unload tools equipment and supplies.
  • Physical strength and stamina to lift and carry objects weighing 20-50 lbs. over distance.
  • Ability to perform heavy manual labor including lifting manhole covers and grates weighing up to 100 lbs. and the abilityto enter / exit 24 manholes or vaults.
  • Make precise arm-hand movements and maintain static arm-hand position (e.g. using a hammer wrench screwdriver or similar tool).
  • Ability to move across rough uneven or rocky surfaces while performing duties.
  • Manual dexterity to operate tools vehicles and specialized equipment.
  • Sufficient vision to read maps identify materials operate vehicles/equipment and locate water and sewer lines.
  • Must be able to speak clearly and effectively to communicate with coworkers supervisors clients or public.
  • Often sets up equipment or performs maintenance in high-speed traffic areas.
  • Exposure to noise pollution from machinery and/or equipment.
  • Exposure to conditions affecting the respiratory system such as airborne particles / pathogens fumes odors dusts mists gases or poor ventilation.
  • Exposure to considerable hazards that may lead to injury (trenches shoring confined space construction sites heavy and moving equipment noise high-volume traffic uneven rocky and slippery surfaces etc.)
