Description

The WIC Registered Dietitian is responsible for providing and overseeing the nutrition education and quality components of the WIC program ensuring services meet federal state and local requirements. The role combines direct participant care with program planning training and quality improvement.

Reports to: WIC Director

Duties and Responsibilities

  • Manage and maintain an active WIC participant caseload in compliance with state regulation and participate in service delivery at all local agency service locations.
  • Responsible reviewing evaluating and processing requests for therapeutic formulas and WIC-eligible nutritionals and ensuring that medical documentation is complete prior to participant benefit issuance.
  • Develop Care Plans and/or follow-up plans in WIC Web Information System Exchange (WIC WISE) that addresses the high-risk condition for high-risk participants and any required therapeutic formula and/or WIC-eligible nutritionals. Coordinating nutrition education including breastfeeding support that is responsive to the participants identified needs/interests.
  • Refer high-risk participants to a medical provider for Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) as necessary. Make appropriate referrals to other health-related and social services.
  • Provide counseling that reinforces MNT prescribed by the participants healthcare provider.
  • Development implementation and evaluation of Local Agency Nutrition Services Plan.
  • Responsible for nutrition education training for staff and nutrition education teaching outlines.
  • Develop participant Care Plans in like with State or Local Agency nutrition protocols
  • Communicate with healthcare organizations to support access to care.
  • Communicate with community organizations to promote healthy eating and access to nutritious foods.

  • Provide counseling that reinforces MNT prescribed by the participants healthcare provider.
  • Ensure all nutrition education materials are accurate science-based culturally appropriate and reliable.
  • Guide staff in decisions regarding participant disqualification based on nutrition indicators or improvement status.
  • Oversee the Continuous Quality Improvement (CQI) plan in collaboration with the WIC Director and in compliance with State requirements.
  • Monitor participant records in alignment with the CQI plan.
  • Act as the Local Agencys Nutrition Education Coordinator and Training coordinator
  • Oversee WIC Nutrition Assistant (WNA) training certification process and final competency assessment in coordination with the WIC Director
  • Actively participates in the California WIC Association (CWA) and WIC leadership meetings.
  • Maintains an accurate current referral agency contact list.
  • Complete all required annual training courses as outlined by CDPH WIC and Northeastern Rural Health Clinics.
  • Uphold confidentiality regarding NRHC staff patients business operations and WIC participants.

Qualifications

Minimum Requirements

  • Possess a valid California drivers license and auto liability insurance.
  • Registered Dietitian and bachelors degree in nutrition dietetics or a closely related field.
  • Current and valid Registered Dietitian (RD) credential.
  • Current and valid Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) card.
  • Effective verbal and written communication skills and demonstrated organizational skills.
  • Ability to interpret and apply program regulations.
  • Confident in presenting to groups including clients staff and community partners.
  • Proficient in communication to include written and oral correspondence.
  • Must be self-motivated and demonstrate consistent commitment to quality and collaboration with participants and co-workers.
  • Efficient use of computers and online operating systems.
  • Spanish speaking helpful.
  • Education Requirements

  • Possess and maintain the RD credential or the right to use the term Registered Dietitian as approved by the Commission on Dietetic Registration (CDR) of the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetic (AND).
  • Upon request supply verification of RD qualifications such as a copy of current CDR certification card or other document of certification from the AND to provide CDPH/WIC with verification of qualifications.
  • Complete the number of continuing education units required to maintain professional registration with the AND.
  • Physical Requirements:

    This position requires the ability to sit stand walk bend stoop squat crouch balance reach twist turn and pull as part of daily activities. Must be able to lift up to 24 pounds perform close visual work and engage in repetitive hand motions and fine/gross motor tasks. Additional requirements include speaking and hearing in person and by phone reading writing and working extensively on a computer.
