JOB SUMMARY
Under the direction of the school principal the Campus Safety Coordinator Level 2 (CSC-2) assists schools in providing primary protection and intervention services for students employees and the school community. The CSC-2 functions as a first responder in the event of an emergency. The primary focus of the CSC-2 is to implement the requirements set forth in the School Guardian Program (Utah Code) and provide concealed and armed protection in the assigned school. Although the CSC-2 may take actions necessary to prevent an active threat the CSC-2 may not act in a law enforcement capacity. The CSC-2 may be reassigned to any school based on the needs of the district.
Additionally the Campus Safety Coordinator Level 2 (CSC-2) assists schools in providing intervention services for at-risk students by building positive relationships with students and leveraging those relationships to fully engage students in the learning environment. The CSC-2 works collaboratively with staff and students to promote a positive learning climate by overseeing the safety of the school campus monitoring attendance enforcing truancy prevention programs and disciplinary policies reporting pertinent information to appropriate school administrators and supporting administrative and campus activities. The CSC-2 will consistently promote the expectation of high achievement for all students by providing preventive support and is responsive to referrals for students who are experiencing personal social or academic barriers to regular school attendance.
MINIMUM REQUIRED QUALIFICATIONS
All positions require selected candidates to be fingerprinted and successfully pass a criminal background check. Additional minimum required qualifications for this position are:
- Must be a current internal Salt Lake City School District employee and hold a current title of Campus Safety Coordinator
- High school diploma or equivalent
- Hold a valid concealed carry permit
- Complete an initial fit to carry assessment within 2 months of hire and maintain compliance with mental health screening requirements
- Complete initial training as required by Utah Code within 6 months of hire
- Complete annual 4-hour training as required by Utah Code within 6 months of hire and every year thereafter
- Complete biannual (twice-yearly) 4-hour training as required by Utah Code within 12 months of hire and every year thereafter
- First Aid certification obtained within 3 months from the date of hire
- Current Utah drivers license and evidence of insurability
- Speak read write present professionally analyze understand and interpret written and verbal communications in English
- Basic experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Access etc.)
PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS

- Experience working with student groups community support agencies school districts community outreach agencies or related organizations
- Experience working in security law enforcement or a related field
- Experience using conflict de-escalation techniques
- Intermediate experience and proficiency using Microsoft Office Suite (Word Excel Access etc.)
- Spanish or other language proficiency including the ability to read write speak and understand
ESSENTIAL FUNCTIONS & RESPONSIBILITIES
- Act in the capacity of a first responder in emergency situations at the assigned school. May be assigned to any school based on district need
- Complete initial annual and biannual training and fit-to-carry and mental health screening assessments as required by state law
- Maintain a valid concealed carry permit and carry a firearm in a concealed manner while physically present at the assigned school. May not unless during an active threat display or open carry a firearm while on school grounds
- Temporarily detain individuals as needed when there is reasonable cause to believe the individual has committed or is about to commit a forcible felony as defined by state law
- File reports as required by state law
- Support building safety drills and school-level safety plans
- Under limited supervision support a school-based approach to promoting the importance of regular attendance through the implementation of appropriate strategies and the coordination of referrals to appropriate resources and student support services
- Support appropriate interventions for students whose attendance needs improvement by identifying and reducing barriers to regular attendance and developing creative strategies to re-engage students
- Adhere to and apply school district and legal policies and procedures and promote an environment conducive to student achievement and well-being
- Assist school personnel with maintaining the safety of the school community and facilities and assist with the supervision of assigned school activities
- Monitor school security systems such as security video alarm systems locks/gates and doors to minimize and eliminate potential security issues and unsafe conditions
- Communicate information regularly with relevant school personnel and students to foster strong connections to the school and coordinate efforts to improve attendance and maintain a safe learning and working environment
- Implement intervention protocols for students that address academic and school attendance issues alleviate isolation identify support resources and provide referrals to counseling or administrative staff
- Perform record keeping of attendance identify students with attendance concerns prepare attendance reports and perform other clerical functions
- Collaborate with administrators students parents and other support teams to implement prevention and intervention strategies to improve attendance rates
- Establish appropriate relationships with students teachers and administrators to collaboratively resolve attendance problems
- Communicate effectively and efficiently with diverse groups of people while maintaining confidentiality and positive working relationships with co-workers students parents and other district employees
- Identify visual or aural cues such as facial expressions body language physical surroundings noises etc. to accurately identify potential areas of concern or inappropriate activity
- Under the direction of administrative guidelines and policy refer incidents to appropriate site personnel (e.g. injuries altercations suspicious activities etc.)
- Inform students of school policies and enforcement procedures to ensure understanding and the potential consequences of attendance policy violations
- Monitor student behavior before during and after school such as in the lunchroom classrooms detention and hallways to ensure student compliance with established regulations and maintain a safe and positive learning environment
- Prepare confidential and non-confidential documentation (e.g. student information interventions incident and activity reports correspondence security logs reports etc.) to document activities provide support to students and to convey information
- Respond to emergency situations to address immediate safety concerns
- Work with other safety personnel (e.g. School Resource Officers (SRO) and other campus safety staff) to help maintain a safe learning and working environment
- Participate in meetings workshops and seminars as assigned to convey or gather information required to perform functions
- Work under limited supervision utilizing time-management and prioritization strategies accurately processing detailed information and meeting deadlines
- Adapt to changing work priorities and work with frequent interruptions as required
- Maintain a visible accessible presence on campus supporting attendance policies and increasing student awareness of support services available
- Perform other related duties as assigned to ensure the efficient and effective functioning of the work unit
- Maintain regular and predictable attendance to fulfill job requirements efficiently and effectively

WORK ENVIRONMENT & PHYSICAL DEMANDS
The usual and customary methods of performing the jobs functions require the following physical demands: some lifting (up to 30 pounds) carrying pushing pulling stooping kneeling bending reaching crouching crawling and significant fine finger dexterity. Generally the job requires 10% sitting 40% walking and 50% standing. The job is performed in a generally clean and healthy environment under some temperature variations due to indoor and outdoor responsibilities.
