The Findlay Lab at the College of the Holy Cross seeks a Lab Manager/Staff Scientist (at the PhD level) to help lead a three-year NSF-funded project on the function and evolution of proteins involved in sperm development and fertilization acrossDrosophilaspecies. The main responsibilities of this position include conducting original research maintaining a well-functioning lab and training and mentoring undergraduate researchers during the academic year and the Colleges summer research program.
The Lab Manager/Staff Scientist is responsible for:
managing the lab on a daily basis
working independently on a research project that is expected to produce a peer-reviewed publication with the employee as a lead author
assisting in the training and supervision of undergraduate researchers often as the primary point of contact for these students (6-9 during the academic year 2-4 in the summer)
drafting and editing manuscripts and/or text needed for grant applications and progress reports in collaboration with the PI
constructing transgenic fly lines through molecular cloning and fly crossing
maintaining all lab fly stocks
monitoring aliquoting and ordering lab reagents
developing and/or refining existing and new experimental procedures and producing written protocols that are accessible to undergraduate researchers
complying with lab safety regulations and interacting with the colleges lab safety staff
modeling and implementing appropriate data management practices
working with international collaborators to manage joint projects
assisting on occasion in the preparation of materials for teaching laboratories or outreach demonstrations
preparation of media and reagents and maintenance of a well-organized orderly lab
contributing to the preparation of research publications and presentations
Required qualifications:
A PhD in genetics cell/molecular/developmental biology functional evolutionary biology or a related field (post-PhD experience is preferable);applicantswith MS degrees and additional work experience will also be considered
Experience with the husbandry and genetics ofDrosophila melanogasterfruit flies
Experience with molecular cloning and producing transgenic flies
Experience with immunofluorescence and confocal microscopy
Strong skills in data analysis and oral and written communication
Ability to teach and mentor undergraduates in a lab setting
Beneficial qualifications:

Experience with CRISPR-mediated genome editing
The Lab Manager/Staff Scientist position is a three-year full-time appointment with benefits pending continuation of funding.
The College is committed to providing competitive market pay for its employees. The salary for this position ranges from $62000 (aligned with the NIH pay scale for a PhD with no additional experience) to $69000 (for candidates with several years of postdoctoral experience; this is the maximum amount budgeted in the grant) with potential for annual increases.
