Senior Manager of Snow Surfaces

Job Summary

Homewood Mountain Resort seeks a skilled and experienced Sr. Manager to lead the grooming team and collaborate with the Snowmaking team and ensure the highest standards of snow quality and safety on the mountain. The Senior Manager of Snow Surfaces will be responsible for overseeing all grooming operations managing a team of grooming professionals and maintaining equipment to deliver an exceptional experience for our guests. This role demands a blend of technical expertise leadership capabilities and a commitment to operational excellence leading to the production of an exceptional snow surface.

Duties and Responsibilities

• This role is responsible for the leadership and oversight of Grooming Operations which leads to the production of a world class snow surface for the enjoyment of our guests and members alike. Summer responsibilities will include slope preparation and management utilizing the summer trails maintenance team and third-party consultants.

• Operational Leadership: Manage and coordinate all aspects of snow grooming operations including planning scheduling and executing grooming tasks to ensure optimal snow conditions across the resort.

• Team Management: Lead train and supervise the grooming team including Assistant Grooming Managers operators and support staff. Foster a collaborative and high-performance work environment.

• Equipment Oversight: Oversee the maintenance repair and operation of grooming equipment. Ensure that all machinery is well-maintained safe and efficient.

• Coordination and Collaboration: With the Snowmaking Department and manager to ensure strategic placement of early season snow to allow for safe and on time opening of the resort at season start and throughout the snowmaking season.

• Snow Conditions Analysis: Regularly assess and analyze snow conditions and weather patterns to make informed decisions about grooming priorities and strategies.

• Safety and Compliance: Enforce strict safety protocols and procedures for grooming operations. Ensure all team members adhere to industry standards and resort safety regulations.

• Guest Experience: Work closely with other resort departments to enhance the guest experience addressing any concerns related to snow conditions and ensuring a smooth and enjoyable experience for visitors.

• Budget and Resources: Assist in the development and management of the grooming department budget. Optimize the use of resources and equipment to maximize efficiency and cost-effectiveness.

• Reporting and Documentation: Maintain accurate records of grooming activities equipment usage and maintenance schedules. Provide regular updates and reports to the Director of Mountain Operations.

• Seasonal Planning: Contribute to the strategic planning for upcoming seasons including evaluating and recommending equipment upgrades staffing needs and process improvements.

• Summer Oversight and Preparation: Manage and oversee all ongoing summer maintenance work tied to slope preparation and roadway restoration to meet current operating standards. Furthermore to be involved in much of the project related coordination with the development team including examples such as snowmaking infrastructure and utility corridor upgrades.

Skills and Qualifications

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in snow grooming operations with at least 2 years in a managerial or leadership role.

• Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency in operating and maintaining grooming equipment (e.g. snowcats). Strong understanding of snow science grooming techniques and relevant software tools.

• Leadership: Demonstrated leadership skills with experience in managing and motivating a diverse team. Proven ability to handle conflict and foster a positive work environment.

• Safety Expertise: In-depth knowledge of safety protocols and best practices in snow grooming and mountain operations. Certification in relevant safety and first aid programs is preferred.

• Problem-Solving: Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with the ability to make informed decisions and adapt to changing conditions.

• Certification: Valid drivers license; additional certifications related to snow grooming and mountain safety are preferred

• Ability to work in a fast-paced environment while maintaining a high level of accuracy and courtesy.

• Must be mobile and tech savvy.

• Must be at least 18 years old.

Preferred:

• Passion for winter sports and a deep understanding of mountain environments.

• Ability to work flexible hours including early mornings evenings and weekends as required.

• Strong organizational skills and attention to detail.

Education and Experience

• Experience: Minimum of 5 years of experience in snow grooming operations with at least 2 years in a managerial or leadership role.

• Education: High School Diploma

Physical Demands & Working Conditions

• Physical Fitness: Capability to perform physical tasks related to grooming operations including operating heavy machinery and working in various weather conditions.

Working Conditions:

• Occasionally exposed to wet and/or humid conditions; high precarious places; fumes or airborne particles; toxic or caustic chemicals; extreme cold; extreme heat; risk of electrical shock; explosives; and vibration.

• Noise level in the work environment is sometimes loud.

• Frequently exposed to moving mechanical parts.
