Job Summary

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Undergraduate Programs - Director CLAS Advising and Recruitment.

The College of Liberal Arts and Sciences (CLAS) Undergraduate Programs is the central hub for supporting students and instructors through academic advising student retention and recruitment activities and services related to academic policies and curriculum (majors minors certificates and the general education program). The Director for CLAS Advising and Recruitment will report to the Associate Dean of Undergraduate Education and will lead a team of more than 30 professional academic advising staff and a small team of collegiate recruitment staff (who work closely with the Office of Admissions). The CLAS Academic Advising and Recruitment teams work closely with all CLAS academic programs and departments on helping students learn about and select programs of study supporting students as they progress through their academic programs through graduation. This role will provide strategic leadership for the academic advising and recruitment teams including setting goals standards and assessment procures for the work of the teams. Additionally the director will be responsible for strategic planning priority setting and budgeting for the teams. The director will represent CLAS on institutional level committees and be an effective partner to many campus offices such as the Academic Advising Center the Office of Admissions and the Office of Student Learning among others. The Director will supervise two Associate Directors of Advising and the CLAS Admissions Manager; they will also be part of the CLAS UP leadership team.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for academic advising and recruitment within the CLAS Advising and Recruitment teams and for CLAS Undergraduate Programs (UP).
  • Collaborate closely with departmental partners (faculty academic staff) on advising and recruitment activities across the many units in CLAS.
  • Provide strategic direction and administrative oversight for CLAS Advising and Recruitment initiatives related to student recruitment academic development and success.
  • Develop and assess goals and outcomes for CLAS Advising and Recruitment teams in order to evaluate potential changes to programs and programming.
  • Provide regular input and make recommendations to the college regarding academic programs curricular changes policy and procedural changes and academic initiatives that support strategic goals for students academic progress and success.
  • Advocate for students advisors and advising within and across institutional structures.
  • Oversee and direct the CLAS Recruitment team to ensure programming and activities are in alignment and coordination with Office of Admissions.
  • Direct the design delivery and evaluation of recruitment and retention programs and programming.
  • Provide overall strategic direction for staffing and professional development of the CLAS Advising and Recruitment teams.
  • Provide functional and administrative supervision for the two Associate Directors of Advising and the Admissions Manager.
  • Provide leadership strategic direction and administrative oversight for the operations of the CLAS Advising and Recruitment Teams.
  • Develop and promote a shared vision that guides short and long-term planning and positions unit for ongoing changes in cultural political and technological landscapes.

Education Required:

  • Masters degree or an equivalent combination of education and experience.

Required Qualifications:

  • Minimum of 8 years of academic advising experience.
  • 1-3 years of academic leadership experience or program oversight preferably in an academic advising setting.
  • 1-3 years of experience in college recruitment or recruitment programming.
  • Demonstrated experience with supervision preferably in a collegiate advising team setting.
  • Experience with advising technology and student information systems.
  • Demonstrated excellent written and verbal communication skills; ability to effectively transmit receive and accurately interpret ideas information and needs through appropriate communication methods and behaviors at an expert/leader proficiency level is required.
  • Demonstrated knowledge of effective strategies for working with faculty staff and students from a variety of backgrounds and perspectives.

Desired Qualifications:

  • Advising experience with supporting students through graduation in an academic department.
  • Demonstrated ability to collaborate and lead initiatives across academic departments and institutional structures.
  • Expert knowledge of issues and leadership of initiatives related to undergraduate student success and retention.
