About the Faculty of Arts and the Department of Sociology of Anthropology

The Faculty of Arts houses the following departments: General Education Economics Justice & Policy Studies English Languages & Cultures Humanities Interior Design Psychology and Sociology & Anthropology. It currently offers the following degrees: Bachelor of Arts Bachelor of ArtsCriminal Justice and Bachelor of Interior Department of Sociology & Anthropology currently offers Bachelor of Arts and Bachelor of Arts Honours degree programs with majors in Sociology and Anthropology.

About the Role

The Laboratory Technologist plays a vital role in providing skilled instructional support for laboratory-based and experiential learning activities within the Department of Sociology and Anthropology. Responsibilities associated with this position include supporting faculty teaching labs working with faculty on the cataloguing and conservation of collections managing the laboratory budget managing long-term loans with community partners handling both human remains and archaeological artifacts and belongings.

This position is a part-time continuing term position working 28 hours per week. Continuing term positions work for recurring specified periods approximately coinciding with the academic year. The portion of the year the position does not work is referred to as an Inactive Period. The inactive period for this position will normally be fromApril 16 to August 15.

Responsibilities

  • Supports laboratory instruction by assisting the Lab Instructor with the setup and takedown of lab activities assignments and quizzes.
  • Prepares and curates laboratory materials including assembling subsets of the teaching collections for instructional use by department faculty.
  • Facilitates student research by assisting faculty in the use of teaching and research collections to support student research projects.
  • Supports the ethical and appropriate handling of human remains and archaeological artifact and belongings
  • Manages and maintains the teaching collection database.
  • Catalogues and integrates all new materials (purchases loans donations) in collaboration with faculty in accordance with classification procedures.
  • Researches obtains quotes and orders resources for teaching and research laboratories.
  • Maintains and expands long-term teaching collections through donations loans from institutions (e.g. Glenbow Museum Royal Alberta Museum University of Alberta) and private contributions.
  • Manages the lab budget and oversees procurement activities.
  • Administers the scheduling sign-out and shared use of laboratory materials equipment and artifacts.
  • Manages student space and provides support for experiential learning activities

Qualifications

  • Masters degree or equivalent experience. A preference for a Masters degree in Anthropology Archaeology Sociology or a cognate discipline.
  • 3 years of experience in a related field.
  • Ability to work cooperatively in various settings exercising tact diplomacy and confidentiality.
  • Experience working in applied archaeology an asset
  • Possess a strong knowledge of Microsoft Office and Google Suite.
  • Ability to use sound judgment in making decisions and to work independently.
  • Experience working with anthropological materials
  • Experience working in a lab setting
  • Knowledge of the ethical standards for caring for anthropological materials is an asset.


Salary: $33.28 - $42.11 per hour
