Moleculin Biotech Inc. is a Phase 3 clinical stage pharmaceutical company advancing a pipeline of therapeutic candidates addressing hard-to-treat tumors and viruses. The Companys lead program Annamycin is a next-generation anthracycline designed to avoid multidrug resistance mechanisms and to eliminate the cardiotoxicity common with currently prescribed anthracyclines. Annamycin is currently in development for the treatment of relapsed or refractory acute myeloid leukemia (AML) and soft tissue sarcoma (STS) lung metastases.

The Controller is responsible for providing high-level support to the SVP as they manage the companys accounting and financial activities by producing financial statements directing monthly and quarterly close processes filing external reporting requirements with the SEC and monitoring and ensuring compliance with SOX. This position directs financial activities of the organization by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate supervisors.

Responsibilities:

• Plan and direct the quarterly close process and quarterly close calendar.
• Supervise the monthly closing process and prepare necessary reports to analyze the income statement balance sheet statement of cash flows and statement of stockholders equity including analytical review of the monthly operating results to ensure accurate accounting records are maintained.
• Implement a process to record transactions by department and compare costs incurred to budget and performance analysis of profit centers.
• Review and record journal entries required to reflect monthly and quarterly activity and review quarterly balance sheet reconciliations for all accounts.
• Prepare financial statements and the year-to-date cash flow on a quarterly basis.
• Perform cash projections to effectively manage cash balances and maximize the return on any excess cash balances.
• Prepare quarterly budget to actual analysis incorporating historical results and future assumptions working with the R&D operational team on the R&D respective areas including quarterly fluctuation analysis to review current and prior period expected activity and associated drivers of increased (decreased) account balances.
• Review financials for international subsidiaries and work with appropriate 3rd parties to ensure compliance with individual subsidiary requirements.
• Review monthly schedules for prepaid assets fixed assets and intangible assets including useful lives and related depreciation and amortization accruals dividends payroll and other liabilities.
• Document accounting treatment for debt/equity related transactions including accounting for debt issuance costs warrants stock and stock options.
• Maintain the Companys equity platform (Morgan Stanley at Work Shareworks) including adding valuations for new awards and re-valuing the liability classified equity awards in the system quarterly.
• Research technical accounting issues as needed and prepare quarterly/annual accounting memos for the files.
• Review and assist with PO Coding invoice coding reviews bi-monthly payment runs and Treasury functions such as wire templates in PNC Pinacle reviewing vendor banking information reviewing positive pay exceptions and general banking questions.
• Prepare all required forms and documentation for new vendors (including OFAC sanctions list searches W-8/W-9 banking details approvals NetSuite creation etc.)
• Monitor and review all finance-related government surveys and forms (including HCAD property rendition R&D government survey and Nevada Modified Business Tax Return) and review/research peer disclosures as needed (including potential new risk factors or new disclosures).
• Assist the department in completing the preliminary drafts of SEC related documents including Forms 8-K 10-Q 10-K S-1 filings Section 16 filings Annual Proxy Statement in accordance with SEC guidelines established for public companies and other reports required by regulatory or other agencies.
• Assist outside legal counsel and the VP Controller with all equity compensation disclosures in the Annual Proxy Statement (including the new Pay vs. Performance calculations and disclosures).
• Review the Companys required XBRL disclosures and tagging for the Companys 10-Q/10-Ks
• Arrange and supervise external review/audits of the Companys consolidated financial statements for the external audit firm - Grant Thornton
• Research and prepare the quarterly GAAP Accounting checklist to ensure compliance with SEC requirements.
• Prepare workpapers supporting annual income tax provision/return and review with outside CPA firm.
• Creates and implements policies and procedures with the rest of the team to identify resolve and document accounting issues in addition to creating procedures to make the close and reporting processes more efficient and accurate.
• Work closely with department heads and VP Controller to prepare the G&A portion of annual budget and forecasts.

Education:

• Bachelors degree in accounting or finance required.
• Masters degree in accounting or finance preferred.
• CPA required (Texas).

Experience:

• 10 years of public accounting experience required preferably with life science companies.
• 5 years management experience preferred.
• SEC reporting experience required.
• Experience with Oracle and NetSuite required.
• Advanced Microsoft Office (Outlook Excel Word PowerPoint) skills - preferred.
• ERP system - Oracle - NetSuite (OneWorld - includes two foreign subsidiaries) - required.
• Mac Laptops - Apple Mac Environment - preferred.
• PNC Pinnacle Cash Management System - interfaces with NetSuite - preferred.
• RDG Client Portal - SEC filing system.
• Experience with Lease Query.
• Access to Payroll - Paycor 401(k) Paychex Flex and equity (employee stock options) - Morgan Stanley at work - Shareworks systems - preferred.
