Job Summary
Summary
Responsible for collecting and processing blood specimens from patients for laboratory testing.

Essential Functions
-Draw blood for tests transfusions donations or research. May explain the procedure to patients and assist in the recovery of patients with adverse reactions.
-Dispose of contaminated sharps in accordance with applicable laws standards and policies.
-Draw blood from veins by vacuum tube syringe or butterfly venipuncture methods.
-Dispose of blood or other biohazard fluids or tissue in accordance with applicable laws standards or policies.
-Draw blood from capillaries by dermal puncture such as heel or finger stick methods.
-Enter patient specimen insurance or billing information into computer.

Licenses and Credentials
Class D Passenger Vehicle Drivers License State License - Generic - HR Only preferred MGH Security RMV Check/Registry of Motor Vehicles Driving Report - MGB Internal preferred
Experience
Completion of a phlebotomy course or previous phlebotomy experience 0-1 year required
Knowledge Skills and Abilities
- Knowledge of various techniques in collecting specimens.
- Familiarity with HIPAA and OSHA regulations and an ability to maintain absolute discretion over highly sensitive patient information.
- Talking to others to convey information effectively.
- Demonstrates proficiency of proper collection methods and proper processing of all specimens.
- Superior customer service skills clear communication skills and the ability to show empathy and respect for patients privacy and autonomy.
- Knowledge and practice of proper aseptic techniques necessary to prevent injury to self and patients.
