Job Title:POLICE OFFICER

Shift Schedule:Operates on the Platoon System 12-hour shift with rotating days offalternating between days and nightsevery twenty-eight (28) days around the clock. Standard shift hours arehours andhours. Must be able to adjust shifts with little to no advanced notice in case of an event or incident requiring additional sworn personnel.

Starting Rate:$33.1683 PER HOUR / $68990.00 ANNUAL

JOB SUMMARY:This position is primarily responsible for enforcing all local state and federal laws and regulations within the airport jurisdiction.

ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS:The following duties are typical for this position. Incumbents may not perform all the listed duties and/or may be required to perform additional or different duties from those set forth below to address business needs and changing business practices.

  1. Assist the airlines and other Airport tenants in security and police matters as well as channeling requests to proper authorities.
  2. Be familiar with all the rules and regulations of Norfolk International Airport as well as applicable local state and federal laws.
  3. Assist other law enforcement agencies in the performance of their duties when it involves the Airport premises and/or jurisdiction.
  4. Perform such first aid as required and assist medical personnel when the need arises on Airport premises.
  5. Assist Airport patrons in cases of emergency and distress.
  6. Investigate disturbances losses by theft and make arrests when necessary.
  7. Issue traffic citations to those patrons who violate Airport parking regulations and Virginia motor vehicle laws.
  8. Investigate accidents confine offenders and turn them over to the proper authorities.
  9. Check all parking lots regularly.
  10. Responsible for the security of all Norfolk Airport Authority facilities.
  11. Respond to emergency calls for police assistance and unusual occurrences that may arise on Airport premises.
  12. Report unauthorized solicitation to the Airport Authority administration.
  13. Answer calls from various departments within the Airport Authority with courtesy and a cooperative attitude.
  14. Performs all other duties as assigned and directed.
  15. Administer and adhere to all Authority policies and guidelines.

KNOWLEDGE SKILLS AND ABILITIES:The following generally describes the knowledge skills and abilities required to enter the job and/or be learned within a short period of time to successfully perform the assigned duties.

  1. Ability and willingness to work alone and at night and on weekends and holidays.
  2. Ability to attend and complete 40-hour DCJS in-service training every two years.
  3. Ability to meet the Commonwealth of Virginias criteria for the issuance of a handgun permit
  4. Ability to show initiative and judgment in noting and recording irregularities and malfunctions of Authority equipment and facilities.
  5. Ability to exercise tact and cooperation in relationships with passengers the general public and Airport tenants.
  6. Ability to adhere to all Authority personnel policies and departmental guidelines.
  7. Ability to perform all other duties as assigned and directed.
  8. Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.
  9. Knowledge of the physical arrangements and facilities of the Airport terminal as well as fire and safety precautions.

EDUCATION/TRAINING:

  1. High school graduate or equivalent.
  2. Specialized skills such as Bicycle Patrol SWAT Crime Prevention Rifle Qualified Crisis Intervention Training Crisis Negotiation Training etc. preferred.

EXPERIENCE:

  1. Six months of sworn basic law enforcement experience from a certified Virginia police agency to include satisfactory completion of all field training required.
  2. Investigative experience to include misdemeanor felony and traffic cases preferred.

CERTIFICATIONS:

  1. Commonwealth of Virginia DCJS Basic Law Enforcement certification.
  2. Must maintain or be able to achieve the appropriate level of Virginia Crime Information Network (VCIN) certification.
  3. Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified General Instructor preferred.
  4. Virginia Department of Criminal Justice certified Specialty Instructor preferred.
    1. Firearms/Control Tactics/Driving etc.
  5. Completed Federal Emergency Management courses ICS 100 ICS 200 ISC 700 preferred.

SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:

  1. No violations under VA 15.2-1707 for decertification of a law-enforcement or jail officer.
  2. Possess a valid drivers license and must meet NAA driving record requirements.
  3. Ability to obtain and maintain eligibility to hold a Security Identification Display Area (SIDA) badge as may be required by assigned job duties and responsibilities.

EQUIPMENT OPERATION:Remain current and proficient in the operation of all police associated equipment to include firearms 2- and 4-wheel drive vehicles command vehicle computers portable and mobile radios handcuffs batons and other equipment as required by the department.

PHYSICAL & MENTAL DEMANDS:Persons with disabilities may be able to perform the essential duties of this class with reasonable accommodation. Employees must be able to withstand all aspects associated with long periods of stretching stooping reaching lifting walking running standing and sitting under all weather conditions twenty-four (24) hours a day. All sworn personnel must demonstrate their ability to perform these essential functions during their annual physical examinations. Employees must be able to adjust to a varied work schedule and engage in physical confrontation when necessary to subdue violent or demented persons. Employees must be able to maintain mandated physical training as prescribed by the Criminal Justice Department i.e. firearms and defensive tactics. Employees must be able to clearly transmit and receive any and all communications via radio telephone and face to face.

WORKING CONDITIONS/HAZARDS:Perform all law enforcement related duties under any time constraints or environmental conditions. Possess the ability to tolerate extreme weather conditions such as heat cold rain snow light and darkness.

DRIVING RECORD REQUIREMENTS: All drivers must be at least 21years of age licensed for at least 3years have the type of license required by their state for the vehicles operated and meet the following driving record standards.

  • License is active and NOT suspended.

  • Any employee or applicant who has been licensed in their state for less than 3 years must provide a copy of their previous driving record to Human Resources.

  • An employee or applicant may have a North Carolina or Virginia drivers license as long as they reside in that state.

  • An unacceptable DMV driving record includes the following violations during the most recent 3-year period:

Committing a Felony with a Motor Vehicle

DWI/DUI

Drug Offense

Eluding a Police Officer

Foreign citizens with no historical driving record available to us

Hit Run / Leaving the Scene of an accident

Lending an Operators License or Registration to Another

Open Container Violation

Passing a Stopped School Bus

Racing or Speed Contest Violation

Reckless Driving

Speeding 25 mph or more above speed limit

Suspended License History Drivers who have had 3 or more license suspensions as a result of moving violations

Temporary Operators Permit

Two or more at fault accident convictions

Vehicle Manslaughter/Homicide

Three or more moving violations within the past 12 months

Note: Texting or cell phone violations are considered moving violations because they increase the chance of being in an accident.
