Anticipated Opening for 2025-2026 School Year

Title: Braillist

The position of a Braillist is now open. Please note the job description is attached. This is a 190 days at 7 hours per day total of 1330 hours per year position as per salary schedule.

Qualifications:

  • High school diploma or equivalent (associates degree or higher preferred).
  • Demonstrated proficiency in Braille transcription and production.
  • Certification as a Literary Braille Transcriber (National Library Service or equivalent) preferred.
  • Ability to operate Braille transcription software embossers and other assistive technology.
  • Such alternatives to the above qualifications as the Board may find appropriate and acceptable.
  • Must hold or be willing to obtain an Ohio Educational Aide permit as defined in section 3319.088 ORC.

TITLE: Braillist

RESPONSIBLE TO: Supervisor of Student Services

DEPARTMENT: Teaching and Learning

CLASSIFICATION: Braillist

POSITION: Braillist

LENGTH OF CONTRACT: 190 days at 7 hours per day - total of 1330 hours per year

Job Goal:

The Braillist provides accessible instructional materials by transcribing and producing Braille and tactile graphics for students who are blind or visually impaired. This role ensures students have equitable access to curriculum and instructional resources supporting academic achievement and independence.

Performance Responsibilities:

  • Transcribe educational materials into Braille including textbooks worksheets assessments and other classroom resources.
  • Prepare tactile graphics and visual aids as required.
  • Operate and maintain Braille embossers translation software and related technology.
  • Collaborate with Teachers of the Visually Impaired (TVIs) classroom teachers technology department and educational assistants to provide accessible learning materials in a timely manner.
  • Organize catalog and distribute Braille materials for student use.
  • Assist in training staff and students in the use of Braille materials and devices.
  • Maintain confidentiality of student information.
  • Perform other duties as assigned by the Supervisor of Student Services or the Superintendent/designee.

Required Knowledge Skills and Abilities:

  • Proficiency in Braille transcription and formatting standards.
  • Strong organizational and time management skills.
  • Ability to work independently and meet deadlines.
  • Ability to communicate effectively with educators students and families.
  • Familiarity with accessible instructional materials and adaptive technology.
